On the surface, when operating on Battery power only, you are limited to five minutes? Why?

CRT cooling fans in the cockpit are AC-powered. Without AC, they will be barbecued after 5 minutes. Extra-crispy.

They have a built in thermostat that will shut down the tube when a certain temp is reached. When it cools it will come back automatically. At least, that is what I think I heard.

They are DC powered but AC cooled. If you forget to turn on AC power they have thermal protection capability that will shut the tubes off automatically. However, this degrades the life of the CRT considerably. Therefore you should monitor the 5 min DC power only limitation to prevent this form happening as they are very expensive.

Actually I have err.... "heard" that they first drop all the color so you just have white outlines of everything. Then if the stupid monkey in the seat doesn't turn the fan switch back on or turn on the AC power they shut off. Of course all this is prefaced by a DISPLAY COOL CASS message.

i have come to airplanes where the external power has tripped off but they left the battery on. ED1/2 were fine after an hour or so. now the battery voltage left something to be desired.

fine canadian craftsmanship if you ask me......

After you get a Display cool message they are suppoed to continue as is unless they get hotter then they are supposed to de-clutter then go mono chromatic, supposed to.....

I had one going into PHX years ago and got the message and 5 minutes later it was dead, didn't de-clutter or go mono chromatic, nothing-dead.

This is only true "on the surface." If you take it below parascope depth I don't think it applies.

Yeah, they tried this once, didn't they?

We don't have to worry about this on the ATR. We have a special 'ditch' feature in our pressurization system. In the event of a possible water landing, we have a ditch button which completely seals the cabin, waterproofs the engines (for underwater propulsion), adjusts cabin lighting, and arms our torpedos. Pretty slick, actually. Suprised they didn't think of this on the RJ.
