Colgan guys. Are you allowed to go VFR in your ops specs and if so how often do you do it and how restrictive is it?

Actually no we cannot per our ops specs. We can only be dispatched under 3585 IFR and Special VFR conditions for some odd reason. We also have to wear mouthguards and helmets when we fly unlike other airlines. Optional however is a dentist bib to stop the drueling. I wear one it is great I can druel all I want in flight. One really cool thing is when we do our preflight we don't have to have a flashlight we just bend over and point our backsides at the area of the plane that we wish to illuminate. They teach us this in training it is a semi difficult skill to master however it saves on battery costs throughout the year. They make us memorize our manuals in training so we don't have to carry them around which is cool. A little german like but it is cool. You have 2 weeks to memorize them. I don't carry a headset either they are banned. We now have EFB's which is super cool so we are a paperless cockpit except for the napkins I request to wipe myself with during flights. I don't know if you would count those though. Oh and the coolest thing ever is the super reduced engine conservation takeoffs. We did a 30 percent torque takeoff last night. Yeah we clip some trees and miscalculated but it was fun and that is what the helmets are for just in case.

Yes we can go VFR !George is insane and doesn't even work for Colgan. We can also go IFR. I heard that anyway not totally sure.

Hey what does the pickle mean in your screen name? Does it mean what I think it means? I like bumpy pickles. HIGH FIVE .......YOU LIKE?

LOL it's MC pickle he is IRISH he is small you wouldn't be interested. What a dumb F in question! Don't waste my humor talents ever again with this annoying dribble. Go debate with your other CFI's where the freezing level is and whether or not you should go IFR with your student who hasn't even soloed yet and on top of that is overweight and semi retarded and will never get a private anyway. Where is PROP I am not happy right now!

Most operations are IFR. There are provisions for VFR but it's like pulling teeth to get it. There is one dispatcher I wouldn't even try to get it from. Every time I see his name on the release I just punch the F/O in the mouth and get it over with. I usually go VFR if there are ground stops. Harder for them to say no when you are min fuel 30 miles away.

I'll give you a straight answer. We can go VFR part 121, 91, and air cancellations close to the destination airport. We can also depart VFR if we can't get a clearance on the ground. In order to go VFR departure to destination it has to be on the release. I've done it a few times on clear night repos (never with pax on board but other folks do). When I call and make the request with dispatch I usually get a "you WANT TO DO WHAT?!!?" and then one of the older wisers says yeah thats "okay" and we are on our way. FYI Call flight service and check for TFRs on your route of flight. You fly the flight as Colgan #### and ATC usually treats you pretty good with hand offs and class B clearances and such. (Kinda like a circus novelty performer.) Good luck!

Vector Victor is right on. It was done a lot more before 9/11 but now . . . not so much. Especially you wouldn't out of Class B but out of some Class G,E airport to start the flight, yeah it works well.

We do it on occasion out of BLF. ALthough, it depends on who the dispatcher is thats handling your particular flight. They will file an IFR, and put something in the remarks that VFR is authorized at Captain's discretion. One dispatcher in particular is a real pain in the balls to get a VFR authorization (thinks he is the de facto PIC) however, another dispatcher that is no longer working at CJC would look at the WX and typically put a VFR on for us without us needing to "request" it.
