Wow...I can see where this one is going. As a pre-emptive defense...JB is not doing them now. It is still being looked into but I think the majority of pilot do not want them....from what I have heard!! As for anyone else...I dont know.

Did them in the citation X but it still took more than 8 hours to do it.

I have done it many times flying part 121 supplemental, but we had to use augmented crews for that... it was not any different than Aruba turns as far as duty day.

We do them in the Astra if we can stay within our 12 hour duty period. If we get delayed, we spend the night on the West Coast and come back the next day. I love Part 91.

Thanks guys! Just wondering. Granted, there are crazier things happening right now, but still a transcon turn would be nuts! Especially in a 737....

And you know this based on your 1900 experience?

I personally, don't think that we should open the pandora's box of transcon turns, but to think that it's any less safe than the rules are now is silly. Currently, you can could be scheduled a 16 hour duty day in you 1900 with 8 1-hour legs and 8 1-hour sits. A hell of a lot more fatiguing than 12:30 duty day with two legs and 11:30 of block time.

It doesn't matter what airplane you're in. Sitting on your duff for that long gets old. At least in the 1900 we're out of the plane walking around every hour.

I was just bringing the topic up for a matter of conversation, not to start any wars or anything...

Hairy guy....frickin' relax man....Everybody here cares immensely if you think it matters a lot. Why do people get so riled up around here!

Why not think outside the box for a minute? How is it any less unsafe than a 16 hr duty day with multiple legs. All you do is babysit the autopilot across the country. You could do the transcon turn like 2-3 times a week and have the rest of the days off. You could do 10 transcon turns a month that take 9-10 hrs to complete. That is 20-21 days off, 90-100 hrs of credit. That is hardly working at all. I hope they do allow transcon turns eventually. They sure beat the heck out of crappy 4 day trips and sitting in a hotel. If you don't like the transcon concept you can always bid for the crappy 4 day trips that would probably pay less and more time away from your family.

I think only the over age 60 pilots should be allowed to do transcon turns, and be able to marry their sisters too.....

Bye Bye---General Lee

Hey Hairy Arse,

Stop picking on the 1900 guys. At least those guys know how to fly gosh darnit! Im a proud ex1900 driver! It made me the pilot I am today. I know my flying skills will never be as good again.

Say, doesn't DL have an exemption to exceed 16 hours or something?

If you think flying a over-grown King Air made you good....then you still have lots to learn.

Do it routinely in the Military

Fly Hawaii turns to/from the mainland. At least there we get the position reports to keep us awake.:)

Wouldn't be easier to try to get your company to improve your "crappy four-day" trips?

Sounds like you are jealous....

Maybe thats why you have an avatar of a Napoleon Syndromed baby

When was the last time you flew 120 hours a month with no autopilot or APU into Colorado's mountain airports in the soup?

Have you ever done a transcon? Did my first a few weeks ago. Nice simple 5:45 time en route 'babysitting' the autopilot while doing revisions and eating first class sundaes. Not so fast sjs kid.

Dealt with a long deice line, bucked 200 knot headwind, and moderate mountain wave chop over the Rocks. Nothing more then typical issues at the office, but enough to give me a very clear thought in my head upon landing in LA. That was quite simply: thank god I'm going to the hotel and not back to EWR.

Obviously the fine aviators that did jet transcons back in the 707 days understood how I felt quite well. See these individuals at companies like AA, TWA, and UAL (who helped make this industry as safe as it is) never saw the need to push for turns in the quest for 'productivity'. Now some fellas in blue shirts come along and seem to think they now better. In the past I deferred to the elders and their experience. Now I can speak from experience when I say this idea is just plain retarded.

Hardly....now that is funny $hit

Its simple....I dont anymore.....I used to hand fly Metro, single pilot, all over the country and then I got smart. Now I hand fly a 747 in and out of the moutains in South America and Asia. Fly 120 hrs....are you kidding me....that is way too much work.

thanks BigMeat!!

yeah, but it makes you a good pilot. You just proved my point.

No, flying 120 hrs a month makes you a tired pilot not a good pilot. Like I said, you still have a lot to learn.

Well said.

Continental, I know of does not do transcon turns. They do international turns down to South America with IRO's. One trip in particular leaves like at 2330 and does not get back until 1330 the next day. It is like 10 or 11 hours of flying in the 737. The destination is CCS, I believe.

Dont worry crashman, you dont want to learn anything from this guy. Else you too might end up stuck at some dirtbag non-sched supplemental.

You've got to love these new breed of "aviatiors" they think they are smart in wanting to work more hours and more days for less money then do it until they are all but dead(65). So much for what used to be an honored profession, now were all being turned into a bunch of Nortons and Kramdens.

So how is doing transcon turns and working less a bad thing? If you would be senior enough to hold them you could do ten 9 or 10 hr transcons a month and there is your 90-100 hour month. You would spend no time in a hotel and if you are a commuter then you can bid the other trips. How is only having to work 9 or 10 days a month working harder? Would you rather do 4 day trips and spend most of your life in a hotel? I would rather fly the extra hours all at once and have more time off. time in a hotel = wasted time that you could be at home.
