I can tell you it is not nearly as great as it sounds. And please don't think you can commute on reserve. It may work in the first day od so, but you're still going to need a crashpad or something. Trying to commute on it could get you screwed really quick! Good Luck!

I did it for a month, and commuted. First day works great if they don't call you, it's like a free day at home. I would then commute up on the next day late in the afternoon if I did not get called. I actually stayed home for the whole four days without a call once, but I had FEDEX going to EWR if I had to for a late night commute backup. The first day your callout starts at midnight, so the earliest show you would have would be noon of that day, so I would just take the first flight up in the morning.

Agreed. It seems everbody I talked to had different experiences on LC. But for the 2 months I did it, I wasn't too thrilled. It was good on the first day and last day, but the middle days could suck. Getting cut loose at 12pm instead of waiting till 1800 to go was great. Bidding R5 in IAH was almost better.

I commute, and I only got to spend ONE day at home.

And for the record, it's not so much a 12 hr callout as it is a 12 hr notification. Example, say you are flying in the middle of your reserve days, you block in at 17:45 with a duty off at 1800. Scheduling calls you at 17:55 and informs you of a 6 am show the the next day. They meet both the 12 hr notification AND the 11 hour domicile rest rule. Some guys think that you have to get your 11 hrs dom rest, and THEN 12 hrs to show time, giving you 23 hrs off. NOT THE CASE, READ THE CONTRACT. YOU ARE ON THE HOOK 24/7. Maybe some guys can go home and then commute in for a 6 am show, doubt it.

Don't forget, Long call gets used first. So if you are coming from days off, look at the open time. If all of it is am shows, you are not good for any of it since you can't show till noon. The sucky part is, they will give it out to all the guys that good for it. Guess what's left for the long call guy to do? ARC/airport ready.

You only stand reserve for about 2 months anyway, so get a crashpad at your hub and accept that your Reserve Days are duty days. You should expect to go flying on your reserve days, and if you don't then it is a bonus.

Also, do not volunteer for "Will Fly". Typically the Will Fly's got the first call for ARC, and I would get the 4am call to actually go flying for a 4 day or so (making more in per deim and pay than the 4 hrs you get for riding the LayZboy for 5 hours).

Reserve will be over in a flash....

I have sat reserve for 5 months in IAH(including feb, should get a line for March), been will fly for every month and have sat ARC a total of 4 times. 3 of them were January and those three ARC days pushed me over guarantee by 12 hours, so they were worth it. So dont listen to people who say you get ARC on will fly all the time. Also with the new reserve pickup window, all you gotta do is look for a trip in open time that you want and call within a certain time frame and its yours.

Unless I swoop in and snag it

I did long call for a month, just for grins as I live in base. I really didn't think it was any better than R5. I didn't care if I flew or not, and I ended up flying the same amount, almost to the hour. Like someone else posted, the early release on the last day is nice, but that's about it.
