Hey ASA Drivers,

I was in ATL this evening taxiing out to 27R behind an ASA ATR72. Any reason why you guys taxi with your strobes on? Both ATRs I saw on the taxiways were running around with the annoying tail and belly strobe. Rather distracting. Or is it just that there are no beacons and you guys use the strobes instead?

The 'beacons' for our ATRs are in fact, white strobes mounted on the belly and the top of the horizontal stabilizer. Some ATR operators have red lenses on their 'beacons,' but ASA's ATRs do not.

Our actual strobes are another set of three white strobe lights, one on each wing and one on the tail.

I wish that we at least had red lenses on our 'beacons,' but we do not.
 
OK, mystery solved! Similar to the J41, except that the 41's beacon was red, and when you turned the strobes on it somehow changed to white.

Also the Beech 1900's have "white" beacons. The ATR is a "freedom fried french" made machine, go figure.
 
Airline Transport de Regional...

Half the time that bottom beacon would fill with water and not flash...sometimes it just "glows" a little instead of flashing.


I miss the bada bing...

Originally, Avions de Transport Regional(e) (ofter with or without the "e") ... today it is simply ATR.

Which, roughly translated, is "regional airliner".
 
A Tight Ride. Always Triping Relays.
 
It was always a challenge for the f/o - start the spare when about number two for the runway, then unbuckle, turn round and find all the c/b's that had popped in the dark, without delaying the takeoff.

We had one crew pull out on the runway without spinning the spare - about 8 crews hollered at them on the tower frequency as soon as they accepted the takeoff clearance.....
 
Call it what you want. Not too many airplanes can carry a payload almost equal to their empty weight.
 
I loved flying that thing. All those silly quirks makes for great memories.

Propbrake slipping.

Water seps. that didn't work worth a dang...getting ice/vapor spitting at from all cockpit vents.

Ever get a GCU that went ape $hit...it would fault and then reset so fast that it sounded like a machine gun. then you turn off that gen...and the BTC wouldn't close...and then it was real dark. haha.

Or at the gate...the tail was loaded and nothing in the fwd cargo yet...gate boards the back first...then she sits on the tailstand...which activates the WOW switch on the nose gear...the X VALVE closes which turns off the left pack...then the electrical sys goes nuts thinking the AC is flying when the other WOW switches say it's on the ground...the only way to fix it was to turn off the batt tie contactors till the weight balanced out.

You forgot:

- Stick shaker activation when the tail sat down on the stool - and the shaker override switch covers had safety wire on them.

- AC wild - 'nuff said.

- The smoke generator in the sim at Flightsafety Houston. Got the sh_t scared out of me there - no briefing, thought the sim was on fire.

- Asking for 8,000' all the way from Asheville to ATL when the trees were turning in the Smokeys....

We had an electrical fire in the sim in ATL when I upgraded. I asked the instructor if he hit the smoke switch, got no answer, turned around and he was already gone, door open, bridge down.

How bout taking off west in ATL, sitting in the money line, on the heavy card, tower asks if you can take Dixie. You bet. Cleared for takeoff.
