I just thought this would possibly be an interesting thread regarding "famous" people or people of "interest" that you have run into out on trips... Any lasting impressions or thoughts? Any crazy stories.??

Saw Michael Stipe in a restaurant in Athens, GA (I like R.E.M.'s music but I HATE their political views).

When I flew for SkyWest, we were preboarding a rather large guy on a LAX-FAT flight. As the passenger walked out to the airplane, I commented to the captain, "That guy looks like that big dude "Jaws" from the old James Bond movies." Sure enough it was Richard Kiel the actor who played "Jaws" the assassin. The FA said he was a really friendly guy, and he didn't try to bite through anything on the airplane!!

Took Dan Rather from LGA to SYR. The flight was closed out and he was late. The gate agents said he proceeded with the "Do you know who I am!" routine. they finally let him on. After he settled down, the flight attendant said he was a very nice guy. Also took Sidney Poitier (sp) the actor, from BUF to LGA. Super nice guy.

Once had Walt Willey (from "All My Children") on a ROC-EWR flight with me. When I was flight instructing, Bob Dole, Elizabeth Dole, and Willard Scott all came through the little airport where I worked.

My dad ran in to Jim Kelly and Hulk Hogan passing through PIT once. My college roommate was flying to CA for his mom's funeral and walked right past Kristi Yamaguchi at CLT.

I made my worst landing ever (Junkstream31 at Page AZ) with Meridith Baxter riding in back. I've carried numerous other celebs and seen even more in FBO's but never really cared. I did spend about 20 mins talking to Gallager once in ABQ, neither of us ever mentioned who he was. He was happy to talk about aviation and so was I.

Richard Kiel also played the physical role of Darth Vader. I wonder if he can really hold someone a foot off the ground by their neck? That might have come in handy if another passenger had gotten out of hand!

I once flew Dee Wallace from CAE to DFW. (She was Elliot's mom in E.T.) Bumped into James "Scotty" Doohan in TYS. I'm sorry to say he was kind of a prick.

My friends and family have flown various celebrities around, and it's funny to me who turns out to be really nice and who turns out to be an as_hole:

Nice: Leonard Nimoy, Charles Bronson, Chuck Norris, Aaron Neville, Sandra Bullock, the late Col. Harlan Sanders (no kidding!)

As_hole: the late Carl Sagan(!), William Shatner, Oprah Winfrey, Richard Collins (of Flying magazine)

Flew commercial with Gerald Ford once 6-8 yrs ago. It was interesting seeing his arrival at the gate. the Scrt Svc guys stood out like a sore thumb when they came up. There was a 10-12 yr old girl and her mom sitting next to me at the gate. I told the kid to watch for some important people. Sure enough, more Scrt Svc and Prez Ford rolled up about 30 seconds later. The kid may have glanced glanced up for 2-3 seconds then went back to her book or whatever it was she was looking at. I thought it was impressive.

One of the scrt svc guys stood next to me watching the gate after the vips had boarded. he talked a little and was friendly. Obviously had some pretty bulky things under his coat. I didn't ask what he was packing, not that he'd have said anyway...

This a pretty funny thread. Was on a flight with Jerry Lee Lewis (who was wearing a horrible bowling shirt) from MEM-BNA. Incredibly tacky. Saw the Chief (Robert Parrish) at Logan one day. Really towered over everyone.

Also was on a flight with the Golden State Warriors from DTW-MEM once. Back when Hardaway/Sprewell were on the team. One of the players sat between me and another guy, who had been imbibing heavily. Guy turns to the ballplayer and says "Do you play basketball or something?" Player says to him "somethin like that".

My roommate flew for Cape Air and just mentioned the other day he had Mike Wallace numerous times as well as Joe Pantalione (Ralphie from the Sopranos).

Flying the Delta Shuttle, we took James Kalstrom, the former FBI guy who helped investigate TWA 800, between DCA and LGA a few times.

We had Yogi Berra on a flight from EWR to ATL for MLB's Century all-star team.

We had Janet Reno on a flight from DCA to ATL once. She sat in coach at an exit row with her security detail. She was taller than both of them.

Johnny Bench from CVG to EWR.

Jesper Parnavik, upside down hat and all on a flight.

Have flown with Uli Derickson once. She's a F/A for DAL now and was on TWA 847 when it was hijacked.

Flying for Trans States, we had Mickey Rooney on a flight from JFK to somewhere.

Also with Trans States, we had Pete Williams (NBC & President George H Bush) on a flight from DEC to STL.
