Age Exemption

Is it true that you can get and Age Exemption on you ATP from the FAA, I have a friend that says he got his before 23.

Also, are the people that are at the Regionals at 18/19 doing PFT (Pay For Training), and what about the Degree?

got hired at 21 no facial hair, no degree, no prior 121 or 135 experience, now i will be here for life.... So 38+ years of senority will allow me to hopefully be the number one F/O in base by the time i retire.

One more thing AlaskaAirlines, how are you going to get hired next year at age 19 with so little flight time when their are people on the street with 10,000 hours which includes some space shuttle time? If you do have a place to fly let all of us know please so we can send resumes over

Just curious, Thanks!!

I got hired in Dec 2002 by Pinnacle with 600TT and 300ME on my 19th birthday.

Yes, I was from Gulfstream

Hey guys!

Well to those who wonder, I work for a regional airline in ANC. They hire pilots from within the company, and that is guys like myself, with the basic FAA mins. Infact there is a class of 6 going on as we speak, I most likely would have gotten on now if I had my Comm and multi done, but I should have all my ratings done in the summer. If you want to get on flying, then you need to find a job thats "within", then you can interview for pilots position when they open up.
So if everything works out the way I have planned, then I should be on with them at the age of 19.
One thing, how can you get on with a regional like Pinnacle at an age of 18-19?

Cheers!

Actually, you can do the checkride at any time before you reach 23, but you don't actually get the certificate... you get a nice letter from the Fed or DE that did your checkride stating that the ride has been satisfactorily completed, or something like that, and upon turning 23, take the letter to a FSDO and they write your new ATP ticket.

My brother and I took our rides at 22 yrs, then on our 23rd birthday (twins) we walked into the Lincoln, NB FSDO and said "can we have our ATPs please?" Picture Flounder asking for 10,000 marbles.... you know, Animal House?? We kinda freaked 'em out with that, just a little bit.

FL000...

.....who let the fukking dogs out?!~?!

WOOF!!!

Chick in my class -- 20yrs old, 500TT, PFT.

I'm pretty sure the FAA changed the rule about taking your ATP practical before you're 23. I talked to a Fed who works on our certificate and she basically said that you can get your ATP before you turn 23, but you have to get a Fed to personally vouch for you to get an exemption. I don't think there are a lot of fed earger to do that.

P.S.

When I got hired in 2000 at the age of 19 and I posted that fact on here, I was totally flamed. I guess times have changed.

In all seriousness, I was hired at 21 into a 19 seat turboprop, and just upgraded last december at 23 to JS-32 captain.

Over in Britan my mom was hired at 19 for a EMB110. She acted as both the F/O and F/A. Those britan regs are crazy..............

The US regs don't require a F/A on anything less than 20 Seats either....

Ask anyone here who flew a 1900, J-31, or Metro......

The FO does his/her fair share of FA duties on the ground.

NO go on the wavier for age anymore not since the 80's sometime. Trust me I tried I called almost every FSDO in the Midwest. But maybe I'm wrong, my ex-wife will tell you that I am about most things. I'm not even 24 yet and this indusrty is making me feel old a $hit!!!!

You're not even 24 yet and divorced? Slow it down man, you'll have too many ex-wives taking your salary at this rate! :)

Beards and such

I saw a PIA (Pakistani International Airlines) 747 captain in SNN a few years ago and he had a beard about halfway to his belly button. Our current MEC chairman has a "moustache" that is about 1 millimeter away from being a goatee, but if you know our MEC chairman you understand why I say that nobody is going to say anything to him about it other than "really nice facial hair Erik."

Hired at commuter at age 21, captain on js32 at 23. Check Airman on jet at 25. Major at 26.

This sounds like I am patting my own back but until recently I never realized that my decision making process was pretty immature for the first years of my career. Stay Humble! It is amazing what life experience will do to you.

A 20 year old fo judges the whole flight by how good his/her landing was and does everything to protect the almighty ego.
It is easy to be a good stick but being a good pilot encompasses everything from showing up at the airport until the time you leave.

I say this because I thought I had it down as a 23 year old captain but I had and still have so much to learn. Not so bad being an FO again!

My mustache grows fine but my wife hates them so I stay smooth!

An old but good thread. Any new info on the young age question? And new stories at the regionals with all the hiring going on at some of them?

Is this really a pressing concern or thought for you? Geez!
Maybe he's looking to get a mustache ride?

Yes, COEX (i.e. ExpressJet) hired a pilot at 18. His hire date was eight (8) days shy of his 19th birthday. He is the son of the then IAH Chief Pilot. Now his father is the airline's director of flight operations.

Was hired at 22 and know of a few that were hired at 20...Hey highflyer, are you sure it wasn't a bearded clam!

Got hired at Western at age 21. Captain at 28. Had some friends that got hired at TWA at age 20 and they were made relief F/O's during the days of ALPA versus the FEI debacles. They said that the only thing they learned sitting in the jump seat of the B707 was that most Capts. needed haircuts. Some of these guys checked out as Capt. at TWA as early as age 23/24. Was a very rough tranistion in those days. OE's could last for several months in some cases with a pretty high wash out rate. Ditto at Continental.

Got hired at 9e and started class at 21 and no I am not a streamer. In the new hire classes I talked to I would say the average age is in the low 30s to high 20s maybe. I see the guys in their 40s all the time in ops and assime they are captains but I am often wrong.

When i went into the MEM FSDO to renew my cfi I talked to the examiner about the age 23 thing and he said you can take the checkride early and then when you turn 23 you take the piece of paper in and get your atp. When I was leaving a couple of inspectors said they were going over to the airport to try and bust some airlink guys.
Good to know they are on our side
