OK gang, there are about a dozen good threads on the board about sunglasses and I've read every post in them. But -- they all seem to focus on the optics or how good they look.

I have a different issue:

I'm trying to find a pair with very thin temples that will fit under my Dave Clarks without digging into my bony head and giving me a headache after a few hours. I used to buy Ray Ban aviators with the cable temples. Unfortunately, they're a) geeky looking, and b) impossible for me to find anymore (except the outdoorsman - and they're beyond geeky).

Anybody know of any other sunglasses that look half decent and have very low profile temples? I'd love to find something with cable temples again. For those that don't know, they're the type that wrap around the back of your ear so the big 'ol paddles don't stick out the back of your headset and push their way into your brain.

My aching head thanks you in advance.

Silhouette's (sp?) are great, and Maui Jim also makes an identical model. THey have very thin titanium frames that are extremely low profile and flexible. You will not even notice you have them on under the old DC clamps. The only problem with these shades is they will cost you about $225, albeit quite worthwhile though. Almost forgot to mention that they are stylish as well.

Good post catbert, I have been fighting this problem for years with no success. WhereamI I looked at the models you are talking about and while nice, you are correct, far too rich for my blood. Anyone have a cheaper alternative?

revo 3039's are pretty nice as well, only problem is that they are polarized and so it could make it hard to see a screen or have issues with heated winshields when you move into a bigger plane.

My instructor had very slim Bolle's. I believe they are under $50. I have a pair of spy's that work well. They are the Astro model. They aren't that thin, but they wrap around my head quite well. Be advised, they are kinda small! But they provide excellent coverage from the side etc.

Where on Earth can I find some Ray-Bans with the wrap around the ear wire band?

There's your problem. Don't use David Clarks. They weigh a ton and smash your brain. Although very good for killing noise they aren't made to wear for more than an hour. I lost my good set of Telex headset recently and had to dig my Clarks out the closet and have been hating life ever since. But back to your question. I was happy to note that the Ray Bans I found were way better than anything I had worn before with the Clarks. Lets look. model number 3175. not the Maverick type, something you could wear out in public on your day off.

Hmmm....I wear my old DC H10-13.4's for 6.5 hours a night, are you really a pilot ???
Got me some Gel seals on 'em an they seal great with anything from a $10 pair of gas-station specials to a pair of 'Bans.
Anything with bayonets work really good, but hey ' shape ' your headset like they tell ya, get some gels and use any shades you like with your DC's comfortably for many hours.

OOops aaaah, disregard, you're a low time silver-spoon, Jet-Poon.

Y'all hiring ????

Yep, replaced the gels many times. Maybe they ain't made to fit my huge head. I wanted to throw those things in the river recently, because they give me an ear splitting headache, but I'm stuck with them for now due to my own stupidity.

And no, I'm not a real pilot, I only play one on TV. ;) I'm a professional drinker and fly on my days off. Dammit, wait, I always get those two confused.

Poon. I like poon. And yeah, if you like New York.

Anyone who likes poon an beer is OK in my book, thrash me over a PM, tell me where to send my stuff, I need to get the ( blah blah ) out of this Japanese wind-beater before it throws a Samoan Pile-driver my way.

I own the Maui Jims previously mentioned, and love 'em (and they're polarized). However, being $220+, I'm paranoid about losing them. But the frames are pretty bullet-proof and the optics are great.
I also agree on dumping the David Clamps: although my experience is limited, I love the Lightspeed headsets' comfort and sound, and would recommend them.

Lightspeed + my Maui Jims = comfortable trip.
