As far back as I can remember, years ending in 2 are bad years to get airline jobs, years ending 7 are good years to get airline jobs. So their will no major hiring increase until 2007, New Years prediction

I noticed a similar pattern... early 80's there was a recession, followed by the big expansion of the late 80s. Then there was the recession of the early 90s, followed by the expansion of the late 90s. Now there's the recession of the early 2000s, which should soon be follwed by the next expansion! It's 2003 now, so things should start to improve slowly (all else being equal- ie. no more terrorist attacks).

Well, I got hired in '98...my father in '66. Maybe the phase of the moon is involved somehow.

What kind of underwear were you wearing when you interviewed...assuming you were wearing any? Every little bit helps. "Well, he's kinda low-time...but hey, no panty-lines!"

Mutual fund managers know you never hold airline stock in the first half of a decade. This has been an adage as long as I have been in the markets and I thought everyone knew it. Airlines always struggle in the early years of a decade but tend to do better in the latter years.

Remember: Past performance is no indication of future returns.

I don't feel that you and I agree about much, but I agree with you 100% on that one.

1992, and 1993, were bad. I was there. My recall of history is that 1982 was bad, but about 1987 or so hiring picked up big and continued until, say, 1990. Fast forward. I wasn't paying much attention to it at the time, but 1997 was good and that wave continued until perhaps the first quarter of 2001 at the latest. After that, we know the rest of the story.
