US military awards up to $1.9 bln in airlift work
Thu Sep 9, 2004 06:24 PM ET
WASHINGTON, Sept 9 (Reuters) - The U.S. Air Force has awarded airlift contracts that could be worth up to $1.9 billion to carriers including FedEx Corp. (FDX.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and Continental Airlines (CAL.N: Quote, Profile, Research) , the U.S. Defense Department said on Thursday.

One of the contracts, worth up to $998.1 million, will be performed largely by World Airways Inc. (WLDA.O: Quote, Profile, Research) with 27 percent of the work going to Alliance Contractor Team of Sterling, Virginia.

FedEx will share a contract worth up to $825.1 million, with American Trans Air Inc. (AMT.UL: Quote, Profile, Research) getting 52 percent and Polar Air Cargo getting 25 percent, according to a Pentagon statement.

Miami Air Team was awarded up to $36.4 million in airlift work. Other amounts included up to $10 million to Continental Airlines, $11.5 million to Lynden Airlines of Anchorage, Alaska and $12.5 million to North American Airlines, based in Jamaica, New York. The work will be completed by September 2005 and may not reach the total amounts contracted, the Pentagon said.

Well, I wish NAA were still part of the World team but, I guess 12.5 million is better than nothing.

Now, to figure out what to do with our 9 (soon to be 8) airplanes! :(

First that is slightly misleading as I think that figure is for the entire team. World was only awarded 94 million for the fixed flying for 2005( down from the 2004 award) although they are estimating approximately another 200 million in expansion flying do to all the activity in Iraq,, ect...

I believe they are hiring as friend just got a call for an interview on Monday and I believe more is possible soon.

"Well, I wish NAA were still part of the World team ..."

They use to be till NA tried to do it to them without even giving them the common courtesy of a reach around.

Naaaa, really sherlock

"do you think World will be hiring now?"

Yes, they are. At least 10 this month and then more in the near future. The ones hired after the first 10 may go into a pool.
