Those were my thoughts. No matter how much you brief something, when your main gear only clear the blades of grass by a few feet, you can bet your @ss that you're clenching your butt and trying to pull the gear up off the ground in those final moments before you're finally airborne!MarineGrunt said:Delayed rotation or not, it still has to get the heart rate up a little!
FracCapt said:If that was the point that they reached rotation speed....yea, they cut it way too close...but chances are they are way beyond VR....especially since Phuket is a 10,000'+ runway, IIRC.
Flying Illini said:They still cut it a little too close...especially since the runway is 10,000' long. Would it have done ANY harm to rotate 500' earlier? But on the other hand, I guess they timed it absolutely perfect...they used EVERY foot of runway...100% efficiency.
What's "IIRC" mean?
It had already been mentioned earlier that the flaps are not in a takeoff setting; furthermore, if you look carefully at the rear of all engines you will not see any airflow "swirl" that is commensurate with maximum takeoff thrust as would be dramatically apparent during rotation at full-power. The airplane obviously appears to be at idle thrust during a landing flare...
FracCapt said:Not 100%...they are airborne before the end of the "runway"....plus, they still have the stopway left. Why rotate earlier? If you're well above V1 and VR, you can rotate easily at any moment.
It reminds me of a contest a couple of pilots had to see who could land/stop a Lear 23 shorter than the other......well, they ended up punching the gear up through the wings when one of them touched down about 5' before the runway began, and then hit the lip at the beginning of the runway. Whoops!
If I Recall Correctly....
I'm only 14, but I know that if I were the pilot of this jet, I would've aborted and tried again. Those pilots must've had a marathon in the airport bar.
