HOLY CRAP!! The conversation in the cockpit climbing through 10,000 went something like this: "So...do you want to go to the lav first or can I?"

No it's a russian plane so it would go more like this-

We are out of Vodka. Tell wench in back to get more vodka.

"Oh sh#@$t, thats right......... ROTATE! I knew I was forgetting something!"

What's the big deal? You don't have any clue as to how fast the aircraft is going. Maybe it's one of those runways where it's just barely enough to takeoff on....and you wait until well after VR to rotate so that you build speed more rapidly. It's a well known practice in certain instances.....mostly REALLY short field military operations.

If that was the point that they reached rotation speed....yea, they cut it way too close...but chances are they are way beyond VR....especially since Phuket is a 10,000'+ runway, IIRC.

Delayed rotation or not, it still has to get the heart rate up a little!

Those were my thoughts. No matter how much you brief something, when your main gear only clear the blades of grass by a few feet, you can bet your @ss that you're clenching your butt and trying to pull the gear up off the ground in those final moments before you're finally airborne!

Sure made for a really, really cool pic!

They still cut it a little too close...especially since the runway is 10,000' long. Would it have done ANY harm to rotate 500' earlier? But on the other hand, I guess they timed it absolutely perfect...they used EVERY foot of runway...100% efficiency.

What's "IIRC" mean?

thought of another possible quote for the pic:

pilot 1: "I thought it was your take-off!"
pilot 2: "I thought it was your take-off!"
flight engineer: "SOMEBODY TAKE-OFF!!"

Not 100%...they are airborne before the end of the "runway"....plus, they still have the stopway left. ;) Why rotate earlier? If you're well above V1 and VR, you can rotate easily at any moment.

It reminds me of a contest a couple of pilots had to see who could land/stop a Lear 23 shorter than the other......well, they ended up punching the gear up through the wings when one of them touched down about 5' before the runway began, and then hit the lip at the beginning of the runway. Whoops!

What's "IIRC" mean?

If I Recall Correctly....

....and the FO says "Oh, I had the chart upside down! No- we can't FLEX on this runway".

Did anyone read the posts below the picture?

My favorite:

[FONT=ARIAL, Helvetica, Geneva]It had already been mentioned earlier that the flaps are not in a takeoff setting; furthermore, if you look carefully at the rear of all engines you will not see any airflow "swirl" that is commensurate with maximum takeoff thrust as would be dramatically apparent during rotation at full-power. The airplane obviously appears to be at idle thrust during a landing flare...

I KNEW someone would call me about my "100%" comment! ;) If you want to be technical...no, they didn't use all of the runway (left a few feet) and they used NONE of the stopway, so I guess they're just amatuers! :)

As for the Lear landing contest...I bet the last guy won!

I like how one guy said that they would be ok if they went off of the cliff the would be fine because they had 30 extra feet of altitude...(and NO GROUND EFFECT)

They got all that water at the end of the runway too, so that might count as a clearway, depending on if the airport controls any of it.

Here is my Favorite quote from the guys at airliners.net

I'm only 14, but I know that if I were the pilot of this jet, I would've aborted and tried again. Those pilots must've had a marathon in the airport bar.

There will plenty of opprotunity to flew jets in Russia, China and else where.... Where do you sign up.....
