The regulation was changed because there was no opposition to it lobbying on the Hill. Without ALPA on the hill fighting this thing off like they've been doing for decades, there was no voice to counter the geezers from APAAD. Once ALPA got on board with the geezers, this was a done deal.

BS. The regulation was changed after years of attempting to get the FAA off the dime to do it, and there was opposition from all the usual suspects, but notably no empirical evidence that there was a "safety" issue. ALPA has very little real clout any more, sad to say.

Bottom line: It was a stupid, arbitrary rule; it needed to be changed, and in one of the only positive developments in an otherwise do-nothing Congress, it's a now a done deal.

You may not like it now, but when you get nearer that age, you may be happy not to be arbitrarily discriminated against. You can certainly retire at age 60 if you want to.

Don't forget the ICAO factor... there already were ALPA pilots flying past age 60 in the US.. operating out of DCA....

You're absolutely right. That started to push the FAA off dead center a year ago, but as time wore on, and even that didn't compel them to act, Congress finally stepped up to the plate.

Sure we can all retire at 60....and what do you think will happen during the next contract negotiation at EACH of our carriers? Hmm? They will reduce the contributions to our retirement plans and they will fight pay raises - using the excuse that "You now have 5 MORE years to work to make that $$"...yeah......great.

I agree, but why is everyone trying to call the White House now? Flying is just a job, and Bushleague has done a great job is dismantling the constitution while you were all paying attention elsewhere.

I'm as pissed as the next guy, but I fail to see where Rez is wrong with anything he's said.

In the end, WE are responsible for our own actions (or lack thereof), be those personal or as a collective group.

It's quite clear that Rez is pointing out that fact, and a lot of folks don't seem to appreciate having their face rubbed in it.

Bitching about it at this point is entirely fruitless. Taking action (whatever that my be) has got to be the next step. It's just gonna take awhile to get this mess sorted out.

I liked APAs approach compared to ALPAs. Im an ALPA fan but Im telling you that lately that is really starting to flounder. From retirement to the silence on the TSA, rest requirements that are not being taken seriously...etc. Just to show how much as a labor union we have slowed down, look at the ass raping we have had in the last several years. Not one job action, not one major demonstration or threat of an SOS. Im am a very big union supporter but I have my doubts on ALPA direction and the judgement our our pilots this last decade.
