If you were a 22 year old pilot, with a Lear Jet type rating and had the following chances of employment:

1- Fly SIC in a Lear Jet under 135 (cargo) with a chance to upgrade in a year or so. Salary between 28K-32K a year, 10 days on 4 days off, full benefits.

How many guys have had the "chance thing" dangled in front of them to keep them somewhere??? Hate the schedule.

2- Fly PIC in a EMB-110 for a cargo op, make 28k a year, full benefits, flying 4 or 5 days a weeks depending on the route.

Some airlines require your PIC turbine to be in an A/c over 20000 pounds, If you dream of a particular airline, You better check there minimums now (of course they could change tomorrow.)

3- Fly SIC in a Lear Jet under 135 (Air ambulance) no word on the upgrade time, 5 days on 2 days off, full benefits.

Benefits can sometimes outweigh additional pay, Being 22 years old, you probably are not worried about it, if you are single.

4- Fly PIC in a BE99, make 28K a year, full benefits, 5 day route, full benefits.

See Emb -110, But I'd take the 99 over it only because I flew them in the "Good OLd Days." I think I liked it only because it was my first "Real" flying job and how fun it was.
The night we ferried back empty and created the Vomit Comet, floating the Deadheaders in the back and them having a few too many beers and Potato chips, One guy filling up the potato chip bag and opening the hatch and throwing it out and the bag hung on the Tail and the "Soup" all over the side of the airplane. I hated cleaning that dang thing the next day but I'd do it all over again if given the chance. Ok somebody wake me up now!!!
That's the problem, Everyone's in such a hurry to get their hours, to get their first Airline Job, to Upgrade to Captain and then sit there forever waiting on a "real" Airline to call them, that they get miserable...Live life to the fullest, today could be your last.
Back to the Bene's....Don't get caught with your pants down on this one....I have seen too many guys get hung out to dry because they thought they were young and invincible or they could make until the Insurance kicked in at their new job....Don't take the chance, Enjoy yourself, Start planning for retirement now (on your own) and it won't matter how many places you worked that got sold , went out of business, Sold the company airplane whatever.

Good Luck!
which one would you chose and why?

Hmmm....interesting point, although I am not rushing to get the PIC turb just for an airline job, I am also considering corporate and even cargo for a career choice. All I am wondering is if I go and take the Emb110 or BE99 job once I get some decent PIC time in them, is it still possible to get a job flying PIC in a jet afterwards? I ask b/c usually Jet jobs are a bit higher paying. And like you said, I should start planning for retirement, and this is the reason why I am postion this. I'm 22, married and with a baby on the way, so I'm just trying to figure out what would be a better route.....I've only been flying for 3 1/2 years and I always like getting advice from you old timers.

3 1/2 years???? and you have a type in a LR and have 2000 hrs...ummm I guess you didn't go to school!!! And I guess that BIC pen works good for you! Just pick a **** job. There are alot of guys out here that would love to be in your shoes. I think that your full of it!! I dont think that you have 2K at 22 and I dont think that you have a type either. B/c if you had a type, then why would you not stay there and log PIC JET??

On the Aeroservice jobs fair a pilot from UPS was teaching how to pass on UPS's interview.
He said doesn't matter if it was turboprop, jet or even a broom as far it is Turbine. They want to see 1000 pic turbine not far 61. So It has to be your name on the Flight release as PIC.
BTW, SWA was there too and it is the same rule.

3- Medflight Air Ambulance in New Mexico

Where/How did you get your Lear-Type?

I had a scholarship from doing the right seat program a couple of years back.

You just added another element to the decision..

You have a family.....
What does your wife say about the differences?
Where is your or her family located to help out with the new baby..You both will need a break!
Would either of you want to live in these places?
It is not an easy decision...and while all the feedback has been somewhat helpful, only you can make it.

1. Don't sell yourself short for jet time or for PIC time
2. You are young and have plenty of time in this field. Relax-Rome wasn't built in a day.
3. Folks say bid one of the three- QOL-PAY-Equiptment
With a family on the way- I say vote quality of life.
4. The dynamics of this job has changed- the million dollar jobs are nearly gone.
Make the most you can while spending as much time with your family.
Live where the two of you want to live.
Time away from your child will get harder every time.

Good Luck on your decision and let us know what you chose.

Go for option #1. You have youth on your side and that is a big advantage. If you are going to upgrade in a year, that puts you in the left seat at 23. If you fly on average 800 hrs a year (about what I averaged under 135) that gives you 1000 PIC jet by age 24 and 2000+ PIC jet by the time you are 26. At that age, you at least exceed the minimum PIC turbine requirement at most airlines. Also, not too many majors are going to be hiring off the streets anytime soon either, so you have plenty of time to build your hours. One of our more noted philosophers on this board will tell you a big hiring boom is on the way very soon because of the number of the year. It's a bunch of crap. Look at the majors, look at the number of furloughs they still would have to call back and train, and then finally look at the financials of the majors. Bottom line: none of the majors other than UPS, FDX, CAL and SWA are opening the doors anytime soon so you have plenty of time to build PIC.

The Lear time will probably be more marketable for you if you want to fly corporate someday too. Not saying it's impossible if all of your time is in props, but from a competition point of view, the jet time may open a few more doors for you.

Above all, go for what you view as being the safest option. In other words, don't risk getting killed or violated because of the lure of quick PIC time or anything else.

If you're from the east or west coast - you don't want to live in New Mexico. Take it from me. ABQ is a little nicer than the four corners area but it still blows goats. I get depressed flying here because of the dead terrain. My girlfriend and dog hate it...as do I :).

I guess that goat will let you do anything once he's been drinking!
