I'm planning a trip to Canada soon and I was wondering what type of radio license I will need to get.

I checked the FCC's website and couldn't figure out which one I need to get out of all of these:

Restricted Radiotelephone Operator's Permit
Marine Radio Operator's Permit
General Radiotelephone Operator's License
GMDSS Radio Operator's License
GMDSS Radio Maintainer's License
Third Class Radiotelegraph Operator's Certificate
Second Class Radiotelegraph Operator's Certificate
First Class Radiotelegraph Operator's Certificate
Ship Radar Endorsement
Six Month Service Endorsement

I'm surprised the third, second and first class licenses are listed on the FCC site. When I was still in radio, they came out with a "general" license that they said would replace the "first class" license, the one held by chief engineers at radio and TV stations.

The RRO, or Restricted Radiotelephone Operator's permit should cover your need. You download a form for the permit and another to make payment. This also happens to be the same permit that replaced the third class license that used to be required of radio announcers who recorded tramsmitter readings as a part of their on-air schedule.

It may be that the subtle difference between radiotelephone and radiotelegraph that allows for the first, second and third class licenses to be listed.
