yep, hate that question as well.

As said above....normally the fastest upgrade time is at places that are the crappiest to work at.

Like anything in life, you don't want to shoot for one of the extremes. Shoot for something safe, in between.

And to brake any tie, or even sway your vote, pick the place that has a base where you can live there.

Fastest upgrade: Great Lakes - right now, they'll practically force you into upgrade class at ATP mins.

Fastest upgrade "without putting up with too much abuse": Hell, I dunno. All of the regionals that don't abuse you seem to take at least three years to upgrade, unless your bro has the time to upgrade at SKW.

If he wants quick PIC time, there's going to be rough times ahead. Period. The debt he's likely racked up at ATP may preclude him from joining any of the aforementioned crappy, quick upgrade regionals. If he's genuinely concerned about QOL, Horizon and Republic are hiring...

If he's a straight out of ATP general aviation pilot with a few hundred hours under his belt, upgrades should be the last thing on his mind right now. He's most likely thousands of hours away from meeting the requirements to upgrade on any jet and probably at least a thousand away from it on a prop. Seniority isn't going to be his problem, flight time will be. But, the even more important thing is that as a brand new airline pilot with his limited general aviation experience, he's going to be more than overwhelmed with being an FO.

Tell him to go somewhere that is a good company that he thinks he would enjoy, study hard, and worry about being an FO... it will be more than enough for him for the time being. Upgrade will come when his senority, flight time, and abilities/experience allow it.

THATS very good advice. I'm afraid it will fall on deaf ears though. We have an instant gratification generation on our hands.

He would be happiest at Delta on the 777. Ask them about street captains.

Well said!! everybody needs to relax, get experience be comfortable and learn as much as u can as an FO.

Does SkyWest still require 2500TT and 1000 hrs crew time to upgrade? If so, I'm assuming that upgrade would take more than a year for this particular individual at SkyWest.

GP

Only people who have the time can upgrade, mostly people from other airlines (SKW hires a lot from mesa, eagle, TSA, pinnacle, mesaba, etc). CFI's probably won't be able to upgrade until the 18-24 months depending on total time.

Upgrade on the CRJ at SkyWest is just over a year, but just like any other airline everything could change tomorrow and it could take him 5 years. It's a great company and there are bases everywhere.

ORD CRJ CA is being awarded at less than one year right now, but that probably won't last long...

1) Many CFI's can't upgrade due to the 2500/1000 turbine requirement, but they will meet that soon and will upgrade on top of existing low-seniority CA's.

2) All of the known growth airplanes will on board by OCT.
