Unchecked it, still does it (well, did it once).

I can't help with your particular problem, but I CAN say that I have been running Norton Internet Security for several years on several computers, both desktop and laptop. I have a brand new desktop coming next week...(can't wait...it's got all the latest and greatest in sound and video cards (Creative Labs Audigy 2.5, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro All-In-One), lots of memory (1024MB)...Pentium 4 3.0...2 Seagate Barracuda Hard Drives...120GB each..Sony 48x CD-RW and Sony 4x DVD +/- RW Drives, etc, etc.., and it's a guarantee that this program will be one of the first installed. It is a fantastic product, and I have had ZERO trouble with it. I also run Symantec's Norton Systemworks. Another great utility. Had to get the plugs in for the great products (at least for me) that Symantec/Norton provides.

Didn't mean to hijack the thread. :)

This will fix it, http://killdisk.com/
I use the free demo, it works great, you're limited to one pass but that's all you need anyway.
After you erase the drive with killdisk (takes about 2 hours for my 30 GIG) you will need to run F-Disk and than format (all very simple to do) and than reinstall windows and your pc will be brand new again.
Before running killdisk make sure you have a bootable startup disk, you can get one here http://home.csumb.edu/o/olsenwilliam/world/boot98.exe
Not sure if you'll need it with Windows XP, you will need a boot disk to F-Disk and format if you're using Windows 98.

OK, I think it might be the motherboard. Again, I know very little about computers, so I may be wrong. But this is why I think so:

1) I have disabled the "reboot" in windows if there is a failure. It still shuts down randomly only when I am on the internet. The last two times I got the blue screen of death and a bunch of mumbo-jumbo. Basically I gathered that there might be a bad/incompatable piece of hardware somewhere. I still dont think its a virus because of formatting the hard drive several times. Does Killdisk remove stuff that formatting through windows wont?

2) Some programs are almost impossible to install. Half way through it I keep getting errors. This is why I think it might be the motherboard.

3) Internet still randomly stops working.

So my question is, how do you know when the motherboard is bad? Is there a test that can be done?

Ideas?

Some reasons for restart are - overheating, bad ram or outdated driver/s.

You can pinpoint what was running at the time - Control Panel >
Performance & Maintenance > Administrative Tools > double click Event Viewer

Here's whats happening...

After it shut down, I checked the event viewer and these errors occurred within a minute of eachother...

Second Shutdown:
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x0000004e (0x00000099, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini022104-04.dmp.

The IP address lease 67.172.247.160 for the Network Card with network address 00E006095566 has been denied by the DHCP server 12.242.19.34 (The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message).

First shutdown:
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x10000050 (0xfc074698, 0x00000001, 0xed09bce3, 0x00000000). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini022104-03.dmp.

I've never had a problem like your describing, I do know that when you add on programs like Norton and anything with the letters AOL in it, they TAKE OVER your pc, massively changing things, that's one reason I don't use them.

Killdisk wipes off all data on the drive by filling every sector with zeroes, this is why you need the boot disk to get back into it and F-disk and set a partition and than format it when it's done.

If your hard drive is new I would return it and get a new one before useing killdisk.

If it's not new and under warrenty than the first thing I would do is use killdisk and than reload windows and see if that fixes it.

If it don't than the HD is not your problem.

Try running a RAM test program like MEMTEST
http://hcidesign.com/memtest/download.html
BINGO!
"Error 1 out of 0 cycles (0% coverage) You have faulty RAM and should replace it."

Every time I hit "ok" it contines with "Error 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9... etc out of 0 cycles...."

Thanks TR4A.

You could try resetting the memory cards and switch them around in different slots then recheck with memtest. If you have more than one card try it with only one installed.

I use http://www.crucial.com/ for my memory. The have all computers models or motherboards listed.

Looks like it was bad RAM. I bought a new chip, installed it, ran the test again and no problems! :)

Hopefully nothing goes wrong now!!!
