Any Arthur C. Clarke fans out there? The man who theorized geosynchronous orbits decades before they were proven also theorized about this "deep impact" mission decades ago. He included a little blurb about it in his "2001" novel. The crew of the Discovery, enroute to Saturn, launched a projectile to slam into a nearby asteroid in order to analyze the asteroid's composition using spectral analysis. I bet Clarke was pleased to watch the mission live from his home in Sri Lanka.

That's the official version anyway. There is a growing feeling in France that GWB got nucleous and nuclear mixed up, coupled with a theory that the asteroid is indeed under the control of Al-Qaeda. It may also contain vast quantities of oil ;)


Meanwhile, the French manned space program continues to enjoy a perfect safety record, while the French military demolishes terrorists around the world...
