Any Arthur C. Clarke fans out there? The man who theorized geosynchronous orbits decades before they were proven also theorized about this "deep impact" mission decades ago. He included a little blurb about it in his "2001" novel. The crew of the Discovery, enroute to Saturn, launched a projectile to slam into a nearby asteroid in order to analyze the asteroid's composition using spectral analysis. I bet Clarke was pleased to watch the mission live from his home in Sri Lanka.
