These are some headlines from a leading aviation publication from last week alone. 6-22-08 - 6-26-08

Midwest Airlines plans to ground MD-80 fleet

United to cut pilots

Northwest to cut capacity

Delta adds to capacity cuts

American ends service at five airports, cuts others

"This is unavoidable," Leeham Co. aviation consultant Scott Hamilton tells the Rocky Mountain News. "With fuel this high the business models just don't work, period."

No matter where you stand on the political aisle, oil will put us into even worse problems than now if we dont do something. Airlines in america are still flying DC-9's, so airplanes will not be running on wind or solar anytime soon. While there are a few reasons for $140 dollar oil, Supply and Demand is the most basic. We need more supply and here in America we have vast reserves of oil that is currently illegal to touch. China is drilling off of the Florida coast but we are not allowed to.

Its Your Job and Your family, they depend on oil to be at a reasonable price. Please read this website and sign the petition and pass it on.

Where do I sign up to get government to stop spending and start saving? That would create a strong dollar and drop around $50 a barrel off the current price.

Did you know that the United States is produces the 3rd most oil of all oil producing countries? Just behind Saudi Arabia and Russia...

$170.00bbl oil by the end of the year...fwiw

I think we need to start a movement to change the constitution and allow Bush to stay in office indefinitely.

And then we should drill the crap out of this country.

And then we should annex Iraq and make in the 51st state.

Then, and only then, will we see the economy we deserve.

I'm with you on most of this, however, there are few things to point out. China is not drilling off the coast of Florida...yet. Three large Chinese companies, SINOPEC, Petro China and CINOOC are involved in a large agreement with Cuba for coastal and deep-water explorations. This is the 'drilling' they are doing. But your point remains valid, they can, and will, drill off the coast of FL, and we can't.

Secondly, people need to understand that any oil we add to the market, as in increases in our own production, aren't kept 'in-house' as a supplement to our supply. They must be bought and sold on the world market and we will pay the going rate for our 'own' oil. What can, and will happen, in this scenario is that other oil producers will likely reduce their production, keeping the world market at an 'equilibrium', ie not changing the price. What DOES change, though, is that the supply of oil we use will not be as adversly affected by rouge nations or pirates in Nigeria, and prices should stabilize or even go down. So sign away, I already have. It's over a million now.

I don't like paying more at the pump, but if this is what it takes to get Americans off of oil, then great. We need smaller, more efficient cars. We need more research into alternative energy sources. We need mass transit systems that are effective.

Getting off of oil will solve more of America's problems than just pain at the pump.

GOOD point!!
However, I still say use their oil and bleed THEM dry over the next 20 or so years. Save our oil for when we NEED it for ourselves. We can then tell the Saudi's to pound sand!!

We do need to address the China problem though. Maybe it's time to bury the hatchet with Cuba and be friends.

I hate the higher gas prices, but if it provides incentives to conserve and develop better cars, then I'll gladly pay it.

raise ticket prices NOW!! No more "junk fees" just raise the damm fares already

What happened to freedom of choice? I don't want a smaller car, and I'm willing to pay. Go ahead and buy your smartcar, just get the he!! out of the fast lane.

I agree... drill everywhere. That said. If you want help now, conservation is the way to go. We have a lot of low hanging fruit in that department.

Drilling will add oil in ten years. That's great but in ten years from now the oil we get will be a drop in the bucket. So please start drilling... But for the love of god. Move to a smaller home closer to work, build mass transit, drive a more sensible car, etc....

To the choice guy. I agree if you have the cabbage drive a Hummer 100 MPH down the highway. I should also say I support increasing the gas tax to reflect the true cost of gasoline, balance the budget, etc. But the rich will always get theres.

I sense frustration out there, time to take a deep breath and be of good cheer. As I said on the airlink pilots message board a week ago:

"The crescendo of public clamor for domestic drilling from coast to coast is growing daily. Even Californians, well known for their environmental sensitivity, want their "governator" to drill and drill now. The Democrat leadership on capitol hill ultimately has no choice but to capitulate and hope they can placate the enviro-socialist lobby later on down the road.

I give the "fuelish" Democrats about 2 or 3 more weeks of obstructionism and then they'll begin to flip quicker than Obama on public financing."

No longer will you hear stupid claims like "it will take 10 years to see any of the oil" or even more brain dead sophistry like "let's save our oil so we have it when the rest of the world runs out."

Drill here, drill NOW, pay less. Gingrich is an intellectual thinker and he's got the right ideas. He's also the guy who rammed Welfare Reform down slick willies' throat 3 times until final passage in August 1996, by the way.

Its funny, you blame Bush, and while I dont like him at all I tend to blame Nancy Pelosi and her democratic lead senate and congress.

Right, because oil prices weren't climbing at all when the republicans had control of congress. Both parties are to blame for this mess, and neither of them has an answer to bring energy prices down. We don't have to choose between drilling, conservation, and alternatives. We need all three.

Yes, exactly my point flyer. However the dems are blocking us from having a solution, that solution currently is drilling, and nuclear power. And the most recent suggestion which Nancy and Obama balked at was a suggestion by McCain that whoever does the drilling, and selling of oil in our country would be granted permits if and only if half of all profits would be used to fund research for alternative energy sources, and if there were no takers then we would nationalize the drilling. Seems like a great idea to me, and would give approximately 20 billion dollars per year towards alternative energy research. But Obama says he is happy that oil prices are this high "oil prices this high are a good thing, although I would have preferred a more gradual rise."

I'm a flaming liberal and I agree with the drilling. That said the quickest results will come on the demand side.

Blaming republicans and democrats is pathetic. We use 25% of the worlds oil. Take a look around. We have no one to blame but ourselves.

I've always wondered how OUR oil got underneath their sand. This ought to solve that problem. :erm:

We just need to prove the U.S. citizenship of the dinosaurs, then it's all good!

Seriously, we need to deplete the worldwide oil before we tap heavily into our own. The last man standing with oil will be king. When Saudi, et al. oil gets to a low point they WILL cut off the rest of the world.

I for one, would like to think of our untapped oil as a great reserve for the future when oil is really scarce.

And as a conservative I want to see us get over our addiction to oil, find alternative sources, however we need to find a short term solution to our current energy crisis, and use the profit from that short term solution to fund research for alternative sources of energy.
Our politicians, on both sides do nothing to help the middle class, period. Unless you are extremely poor, or rich nothing will ever change for you and me.

There are no viable "alternative energy" sources. Not now, not ever. Solar, wind and biofuels comprise far less than 1% of our current energy. The sun doesn't always shine and the wind doesn't alway blow. Sure they can help as a suplement, but will never contribute a significant amount. Biofuels, 100 years ago (with a population ofaround 75 million) 25% of our farmland was used to grow horse feed. So, if we all traded in our cars for horses it would require all of our available farmland to feed them. Cars use more energy than horses. Oh, did you want to eat too?

Oil, coal, natural gas and nuclear, these are our options and they are all available in abundance. What is lacking is political will and leadership.

I agree! The first video is with Bill O'Reilly. I'm not a big fan of his but he does come down on both Republicans and Democrats. The second video is just funny. 1) Nancy Pelosi can't do math and 2) We're still waiting on that "commonsense plan" Nancy...

An alternative fuel that COULD work is Hydrogen. That said, it has to rely on a current fuel to obtain its full potential, which is nuclear. Hydrogen fuel takes a lot of energy to make, and can only work with nuclear based power.

That's the kind of long term thinking that will never work in this country. We want what we want, and we want it now.

It would be nice to be the last man standing with oil reserves. It would be nicer to tell the Saudi's to pound sand.

They say it's not speculation, and that's its supply and demand related. If you think the value of oil will go up faster than inflation, you'll make more money leaving it in the ground and pumping it later. Right now that's the real problem. The rise in price isn't directly speculation, its speculation that oil will go continue to rise in price so pumping it today has no advantage.

How about the government raising interest rates to stop the decline in the dollar. Oh wait, we have a war to pay for..............I hope the removal of saddam was worth it.

It probably was to the people of Iraq that he was torturing and murdering.
To me the war is not worth it.
