I went to Skywest in 1999 (though I've long since left), and I had college/industry buds that went at the same time to Mesaba, Horizon, Eagle, AirWis, ACA, and CO-EX. (never had any close buds end up at ASA or Comair)
Looking back at things, I upgraded quicker in both types (Only guy who beat me was the AirWis guy), made more money, called in sick WAAAYY more (and never got in trouble), flew less, slept with more flight attendants (Co-EX guy slept with more but he had more game than I did), and was treated better (quality of layover hotels, treatment by scheduling, length of duty days, length of block hours flown, etc) than any of my friends at the aforementioned airlines. Yes, I "had" to live in Portland, San Diego, and Salt Lake City.
Unless times have changed and all those other regional airlines have gotten better and SkyWest has gotten worse (which I admit, is quite possible, since I don't know sh i t about that segment of the industry anymore), then I'd say it would be pretty stupid for a guy to not go to a SkyWest interview.
If you're expecting a great job at a commuter airline, then you need to seriously think again. There's really two tiers of commuter airlines. There's the Great Lakes / Mesaba / Colgan / Commute Air / Trans States tier. And then there's the SkyWest, ASA, Comair, Horizon, AirWis, Co-Ex tier. One's bad, one's worse.
They all suc k to one degree or another. The best you can hope for is to get in, get your PIC time, get laid, work as little as possible, and get out to Soutwest, Continental, FedEX, JetBlue etc. If you are expecting much more than that from any of these companies, then you're an idiot in the 1st place.
