Fellow pilots,

We are having trouble filling interview classes...pilots are just not showing up.

Now, I know some possible reasons. What do you think are their reasons for not showing up for an interview?

Serious responses only please.

Are there really a bunch of people not showing up for class at Skywest?

Apparently half are showing up for the interview.

No union
Single payscale

I won't touch the Union vs Non union can of worms. In my opinion, I don't think a new hire with no airline experience cares whether or not they will work for an airline who has or has not. Ok...maybe I'll touch it a little ; )

Payscale...

I agree 100%. I am embarrassed to be flyin one payscale.

Newhire pay...

I think they should be paid at least $22 /hr

No Union is a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

Pay being not being atleast $24 if not more for first year f/o is what keeps me away.

There are a lot of 121 guys floating around the airlines right now. Due to many factors. I think many of them know first hand that union representation is vital and Skywest doesn't offer that protection.

i applied there and xj at the same time and was supposed to interview at both. i interviewed at xj first and got an offer the same day and declined the skywest interview! whoops..that was a bad move, i don't work at xj anymore :)

at the time, skywest was not paying during training and the $19/hr also steered me towards xj, among other personal reasons....

no union is THE reason i never applied to skywest, so yes people with no 121 experience do think about such things

Funny, I came to work at SKYW for the simple fact they DONT have a union, amongst other things. And yes, I did this coming from an ALPA carrier.

I think people arent showing up because flying airplanes is dangerous (chomping of teeth)...let me know if you get that

Unfortunately, not many regionals are at that level, a couple are close however. Good luck...

How bout not getting paid jack crap and not getting based in Fresno.

whats wrong with the "no"? If you want a good schedule and to move up in seniority quickly go with FAT. Plus fresno isnt too expensive compared to other places. And at night time there always is a friendly helicopter shining a light down on the ground to help you find your way home.

reasons TO work for SkyWest:

-total compensation is at or above other regionals
-bases in nice places
-airline is growing, adding aircraft, etc.
-has never furloughed a pilot (how many ALPA regionals can say that?)
-financially healthy company with good future, deals for the long term with Delta and United

FLAME AWAY!

Only 4 months and 29 days until I can apply again. With everything going on in the aviation world. For me it is SkyWest!!!! That is not saying I am not keeping my options open but I think SkyWest is for me. In the "bad" letter, they said I need more time and more qualifications. I don't have a clue what I did wrong. Must of came in with ******************** on my shoes I didn't know about.

I've had my resume in there for 1.5 years. Walked by 2 pilots, also did the on-line thing. No response, No call... During that time interviews and offers from XJ, Wiskey, Republic, and XJT.

Translation:
Your calling the wrong people.

...and yes I am bitter

I live in Chicago, have been an instructor on the CRJ (ground instructor) and have over 1000hrs in it (200 and 700). I have had my resume walked in by 3 different people there (one of whom is a chief pilot) and have never heard back for an interview. I don't know who they are calling but it's not me. I decided to go to XJT after waiting for a year for a call. XJT called me within 2 hours of completing the online application. Skywest have never so much as emailed me saying they received it.

;)Ahhhhh SKY! ASA has NEVER furloughed!

Most people that I have talked to do NOT like the "same payrate" thingie! FWIW!!!

Maybe it's the possibility of a merger with ASA. Instead of being at the bottom of a list of 2000, you would suddenly be under 4000! The ASA purchase has created a lot of uncertainty on both sides of the house (SKW/ASA).

They called me 3 times in 2 years.... I think SkyWest would be one of the better regionals to work for. Chicago is an "easy" commute, and Denver is a great place to live.

Cost money to fly to an open house for a chance to get an interview. Im a pilot, I cant afford that. I dont have any kind of free travel I can use.

My guess is that the merger uncertainty is probably the biggest thing scaring people off of SKW. It has the employees wondering what might happen as well.

I personally don't think the union thing has much to do with it. A few may see it as a disadvantage.... and a few may actually think that being non-union is a good thing. Overall, most potential newhires probably don't care either way.

If it is truely a necessity to attend a group interview, that could be a problem too. The road shows need to at least get around more. People who have a recomendation and the requirements should certainly be non-rev'd to SLC for a chance at the full interview.

There are a lot of furloughed guys kicking around now, and we've all done the crappy first year pay thing, already. $19/hr is simply not worth it once you've already done it one (or more) times. (Not that it was right the first time, either...)

Most people I've talked to do NOT like the pay cut, strike and try and find a new job "thingie" either.

Skywest doesn't pay you during training, correct? That could be a big turn off.

Also, your first year pay is abyssmal (although 2nd year isn't bad), and the Jr. Captain rates leave a lot to be desired, especially considering you could be earning them in a 76 seat jet on the west coast where cost of living is high.
