Decides to fly back home along a route he was not familiar with, and ends up in LaGuardia's airspace. Then, after being told of his mistake by ATC, decides to fly a 1/2 mile circle around the Statue of Liberty, before being intercepted by a NYPD helicopter.

If he was so frozen with fear, why fly a loop around the Statue of Liberty?
Sounds to me like he knew it was his last flight and figured what the hell.
