About to start ground school soon in Wisc. They say bring a flight case or container large enough to fit all the manuals - will a backpack suffice for the time being or is it time to get the obese briefcase?

Just go ahead and buy a decent flight case. Don't forget the EasyMac and lots of Ramen noodles either.. Get one of those backpacks with slots for your IPod and cell phone, they're cool when strolling through the terminal. :D

(sigh)

Wear the backpack.

Make sure you submit a photograph to Flightinfo.com so we can start comparing and determine who looks more professional: the Greyhound Driver or the Airline Pilot.

Yeah, a backpack would be Great. In fact, after ground school and sim, don't even worry about buying a stupid $200 leather flight case for your manuals. Your trusty back pack will work fine for many years. C'mon, your a pilot, and lots o' pilots are doing that these days, just check the recent postings here on the subject. Hopefully your back pack advertises the flight school you just graduated from, ie. Riddle, Comair academy, UND, Purduebie, et al.

Buy yourself some black (or appropriate color for uniform) socks too. I almost died going threw security in PNS when this other pilot took off his shoes going through security. Nice white socks Michael Jackson.

Oh make sure you pack your kneeboard, you'll need it in the sim. Take notes on it during the sessions it's the thing to do.

You won't need the flight case until CPT and sim. Most folks get to go home for a bit before you start those things. A backpack will be fine until then. Make sure before you buy a flightcase that you get one that will fit in the CRJ bag space. Don't bring your headset, you won't need it until IOE.

You can get food at the supermarket near the hotel, so don't bother packing that. You can also get most anything else you might discover you need. Don't bring too many clothes, you can do laundry at the hotel.

I'd bring note cards, highlighters, a pad or two of paper, some pens and pencils. Don't forget something fun, like an ipod or cd player, and of course your cell phone.

Bring a good attitude and get along well with others. Study hard and you'll be set.

I think the single shoulder back back and a fanny pack with suffice, sporto.

You forgot the toothpicks for your eyelids.
Some chocolate: it counteracts depression.
Some Beano to squelch the cheese....wait, you're in Wisconsin and their pledge of allegiance is to wave your right hand in a rainbow arcing motion, while balancing on one leg and turning loose a free-range oily wafer.
