Why does DTW in particular (DCA sometimes too) submit PDCs with amendments that spell out the entire SID, radial to radial, and then tell you to fly the SID?

What the fug is the point of a SID if you're going to just spell it out anyway?

Recently, they submitted to us a PDC that told us to fly an amended route which was actually a real amendment to the SID, and then at the end of the entire thing, told us to fly the SID, which was a complete contradiction to the initial instructions. We had to call and bring it to their attention but really I mean wtf?

Probably just tryin to help the DC9 crews out! :D

I've heard that reason before but it doesn't really help the DC9 crews because they all carry Jepps with SIDs.

A normal airport says cleared via the Fictional 9 departure when the Fictional 9 departure exists.

Detroit says cleared via the 134 radial to intercept the 329 radial to intercept the 224 radial to intercept the 333 radial... Which is exactly what the Fictional 9 departure is.

Not only that, but when Detroit clearance spells out the entire SID in the PDC, it treats it like an amendment which it really isn't. Except that one time where they actually did amend the SID, but then at the end, said to fly the SID.

I got a reroute recently that was exactly like this. By the time we built the damn thing in the FMS we realized it was exactly the same as a charted SID. It doesn't make sense.

It was even better before we had PDC's and they read us the entire clearance. The best part was they would read all the waypoints on the departure, but wouldn't tell you another part. I think it was the departure frequency or maybe even the altitude. Probably the departure frequency.

125.52 you are going off 4/22 and getting vectors. 132.02 is 3/21 and getting vectors.

Copy?

Dont forget to read back runway assignment.... (with the current atis that changes every 10 minutes)

Migratory waterfowl in MSP in the dead of winter. That's a nice touch. The best I have heard every once in a while in MSP is "taxi with appropriate lighting".

LGA Tower seems to be ultra paranoid since Sully/Skiles went down. The other day they were warning every departing plane of "a bird" (singular) over runway 4.

Re: DTW.

This was 10 years ago, but same vein: They'd say, "Stby for full route clearance"

OK

"Cleared to blah blah DXO-343 radial blah blah. . ."

It was always the same as as filed. For a while I tried, "Cleared as filed. . ." and they'd say, "No, read back the amended, please."

After that I tried, "Cleared as blah blah, which is the same as as filed." They didn't care for that.
At the end, I gave up: "Copy, squawk 1234."

I was told that the problem was a difference in how dispatch's software files the routes and how it meshes with the ATC computers.
