I have a weekend trip coming up to Portland, Maine June 2 - 4 and my wife is coming along. I haven't been to PWM in several years. Any suggestions?

J's Oyster Bar. Dive bar with good food at a great price and an awesome raw bar to boot. Oh yeah, cold beer as well. I think they even have outdoor seating this time of year.

Watch out for the ugly, early-30s chick behind the counter at the FBO. Shes Satans little sister, and spare thee that provokes the rath of her.

The most unprofessional FBO manager Ive ever experienced! And dont expect her to do anything for you without grunting and moaning at the effort she will have to spare to do it.

Try Three Dollar Dewey's located by the water. Good food and great beer! Plenty of shops around there to walk around after.

Have fun!

the whole area arund the square is pretty cool. There's a pub just out of the square toward the harbor that has an enourmous guiness toucan painted on the side...if memory serves that's pretty good joint. There is a place right on the harbor that has lobster and beer and clams and the usuall suspects....might be the one mentioned above...I'm trying to remember, if I do I'll repost. You shouldn't have any trouble finding good food/drink around downtown; I've always just struck out with no aim and done pretty well. I also always stayed @ the holiday inn by the bay. good digs, walking distance to most things and potentialy good view of the harbor.

I know that was all pretty vague, but PWM is a cool trip ESP. this time of year. Have fun.

Freeport ME is about 30-40 min drive north of there. Neat little coastal town and home of L.L. Bean if your into the great outdoors. Big selection of fly fishing equipment.

go to 3 dollar deweys drink a snakebite and repeat. Do this a bunch of times stumble down to Boones lobsterhouse stay away from that god damn tourist trap domillios and get yourself a nice shoremans platter. I remember when going to boones ment you had to chain down your car and keep the hookers from molesting you the 5 foot walk to the door.

There is so much to do in PWM plus the surrounding areas. Don't forget marks showplace, which is now platinums. It used to be marks topless donut shop.

There is a great BBQ place on the other side of the new bridge. Go over the bridge which is downtown PWM you can't miss it because the ferry parks under one side and go to the other side. At the end of the bridge take a left and another left so your going under the bridge. Not much to look at but it's Beales st bbq. Excellent They have a wall of fire.

Get drunk, party. Give me a shout I spend a lot of time in the area and am allways up for a beer.

For pizza and good drafts try The Flatbread on commercial street down in the Harbor area. The idea of shooting up to Freeport and L.L. Bean is good too. There are a number of outlet stores up there that should make your wife happy. Might not make you so happy when the bill comes though.

Great place. I'd live in Portland if I could have a decent job there.

Mr. I.

If you were coming up later I might just give you a ride in a 1959 Chris Craft Capri Mahagony. Still a little early to put the boat in. Takes forever to prep it.

Better yet your wife is coming along. Take her to the outlets in freeport. have the lunch at the haraseeket in. Downton freeport. The food is excellent. They have a buffett which is really just anything you want and they cook it plus they have home churned icecream to top it off.

Thanks guys, for some good ideas. Diesel, If I get up to PWM again later this sumer, I'll take you up on the boat ride and I'll bring the beer.

The Oyster bar has some nice ambiance but keep the old lady away from their for dinner. The place is a tourist trap and the bill gets real big real fast.

The Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League may still be in the Calder Cup playoffs. The Portland Civic Center is a good place to see game and its cheap.

That's what expense accounts are for. :D

Try to get the Harbor Visual RW29 approach. The view is spectacular, especially if you get liberal on your altitudes.

if your heading portland you have to go to the old port. three dollar deweys as previously mentioned is a good place, old port tavern, the iguana. Most of the places are good but it is a hippy town. have fun.

Good breakfast at a place near the airport called "eggspectations" looks like a martini bar but they do a nice breakfast... Good OJ.

Drink a couple of Shipyard beers for me. If you have a car you could head down to York Beach area for the day(about 45 mins south on 95) or drive up the coast on route 1 there is some awsome scenery if you take some side roads down to the little villages along the coast. Let us know what you do on your trip.

I live in Portland and all the bar/food suggestions so far have been right on the money. The Portland Head Light is also a nice place to visit. If you get the harbor visual to 29 from the south, you'll have a nice view of it as you come it to land. I would also suggest a visit to 2 lights state park and eat at the lobster shack. Good food and you can't beat the view.

Freeport is definitely worth the trip, especially if the wife is joining you.

Enjoy, it's a great town.

Hit up the old downtown area... On early arrivals I like to go downtown to the little grocery store right on the harbor... get some bread and fruit then sit down there and snack while watching the people.

Walk the shops (lots of them), be sure to hit the fudge place a few (2) blocks up from the harbor, the condom store (Condom Sense) place right next door for a good laugh, then head back down to the water and eat out on the deck at portland lobster co. Beers, 2 lobsters and sides for about $18, IIRC (been two summers since I was last there).

Drive out to the light house and if you have the time head up to Freeport. It's a great drive and the scenery is really nice. Plus there are plenty of little places to stop along the way to get off the beaten path.
