Talked to three JAL pilots, one retired and two currently on with the company. All three said that training was humiliating and took from 9-11 months. Comments?

The training does take a long time, but I would not call it humiliating. Training for me took about 7 months. I think it's only humiliating for those who insist on doing procedures the way their former airline did it.

When I interviewed on the original JALWays contract, I was told that you would train in Japan for a Japanese certificate to Japanese standards. If the checklist said that a switch was to be moved at 18,000 ft, it was moved at 18,000 ft. Not 17,999 or 18,001, but 18,000. And that the only passing grade was right on the money. It kind of explains the JAL 747SR crash, doesn't it.

JAL is unquestionably anal about procedure, but its safety record is not in question.
