Hey AirTran dudes -

What is the nickname for AirTran?

No, this is not a joke. I will explain later. :D

Gup

Seconding da tranny.

OK here's the deal.

I'm in line at security last week in front of one of your bro's. I ask "how are things at da Tranny" trying to chat the guy up. In return I get "I don't work there." After carefully studying the "a" on his wings and the "AirTran" on his badge I say "oh, I thought you were an AirTran guy." He says "yes I work for AirTran."

I knew he was now pissed at me and instead of apologizing I simply said "uh, ok" and walked off hoping he was going to jumpseat on my flight! :)

Should I refrain from da Tranny next time? Lord knows I'd hate to get all of you pissed at me.

I'm sure it all went down exactly like you described it, (cough, cough, bull$hit). Maybe he thought you were a tool and rather than telling you to f-off he was just trying to ignore you.? Either way, if you need to make some new friends, go try Craigslist. And for Gawd's sake, stop worrying about some Hater 'Tranny pilot disrespecting.

I have no doubt he thought I was tool. That wasn't the question. The question was if you guys went by da Tranny. This dude obviously took offense to it.

I've always liked the "a Train". I have heard the da tranny a few times as well. Every place has nick names or slang terms, but Chautauqua has always had some of the best nick names.

"da Tranny" is pretty common and I wouldn't be offended if a fellow pilot asked me with it phrased like that.

You never know how a situation went down when people talk about it on here, but every airline has their fair share of tools in the shed or people who are just strung a little too tightly, it's just the way life goes. I wouldn't worry about it.

You know what I call Air Tran pilots? Well, I call them VERY NICE GUYS. Those guys are some of the MOST professional pilots I have ever seen, and I always try to say a big "HELLO" to them in the concourses. You guys are GREAT! Have a great day!

You can ask him yourself when you see him in ops in the next few months.

PS what ever you do keep SWAPA not ALPA

I managed to offend an inflight crewmember who was also a former AirTran employee like me by saying "weren't you a tranny?" Turns out that is a slang term for Transvestite, so maybe the new Southwest nickname is much better

Airtran was started by Mesaba. When Value Jet (not the pilots mind you) put put one in the swamp they needed a new certificate. Northwest told Mesaba to get rid of the 737 certificate out of Orlando. Hence a match made in heavan.

Sorry, I re-read my post and it sounded a little trashy. I updated it a little. Not trying to flame Airtran, just a quick synopsis of how you became who you are.

For those who don't remember or weren't flying then, they went by the "Manatee" callsign.

Don't worry about the haters. That kind of stuff doesn't bother me. Personally I call it "The Tran". When I came to aai, it quickly became apparent to me that my current employer did not value or respect crew members the same way that your airline currently does. If the deal closes, I will welcome the change.
