what cleaner works best?

Use 'Purple Power' cleaner you can get at any auto parts store. Its really harsh, you'll want to water it down some, but it will get the soot right off. Wet the plane, spray it on, then soap and water scrub brush it off. If you use it full strength it will dull the paint, but I think it still looks better than the soot.
 
Brulin Formula 815. Stuff works miracles. Spray it on and everything melts right off, from exhaust to belly grease. Little to no scrubbing needed on stuff that otherwise requires a ton of heavy cleaner and elbow grease. You use an attachment that hooks up to a garden hose. Our MX dept. has a 55 gallon drum of it.
