Passengers: New airline is canceling flights

Company seeking new financing, has made no official statement yet

Although Western Airlines has made no official statements today on the status of its operations, several ticketholders say they have been told that their flights scheduled for the days and weeks ahead have been canceled.
The air service announced Tuesday that this morning’s San Diego flight was canceled, although a spokeswoman said they were hoping to get out of temporary money difficulties with new financing to be arranged later today.
But the prognosis now looks cloudy for the air service that launched its first flight Jan. 18.
Waylon McAllister of Bellingham had been planning on a Friday trip to Mesa, Ariz., to visit his girlfriend, but when he called Western’s information line, he was told the flight was canceled.
Tom Brown, another Bellingham resident, had been expecting to fly to San Diego on Saturday to begin a Mexican cruise. When he called the airline to check on the status of his flight, he said he was told that the airline had “ceased operations.”
Kristin Mitchell is among those who recently completed four weeks’ training to become a flight attendant for Xtra Airways, the operator of Western’s charter flights. She said flight attendants did not learn of Western’s financial difficulties until Tuesday night, via e-mail, and she was still hoping that Western will manage to work through its difficulties.
“We are all very devastated right now,” she said. “We have all become like a family. It’s very disheartening.” Mitchell said she was one of many who left a good job for the chance to fly.
“I do love flying and this is what I want to do,” Mitchell said.
