In 90 days, the plan would allow 48 flights into the airport a day. Their crews will have to have their backgrounds checked and an armed law enforcement officer will have to be on board, the people said.

Planes will have to stop first at one of 12 so-called gateway airports so passengers and flight crew can undergo security screening, according to the plan.

I'm kind of underwhelmed, having to stop in to a "gateway" airport... I guess it's better than nothing but I don't see us going back in there.

I guess you can have Barney Fife onboard and that will take care of that requirement.

If anyone finds a list of the 12 gateway airports, please list them. My boss travels to DC quite frequently.

I wonder if retired law enforcement officers will count? Retired Secret Service? MI5? Gurka? Or will they have to be active Federal Air Marshals? If someone hears something please post it. Currently the NBAA has nothing?

you get out of your airplane and are going to have this annoying red dot on your head wherever you go from the snipers on the roof. don't even sneeze or your head will disappear in a puff of red mist.

Well to be honest with all of you I would just as soon never operate at DCA again. I have flown everything from a Kingair 90 to Boeing 727s in and out of DCA and if I never go back it is fine with me.

IAD is just fine, nothing wrong with the Marriott Suite Hotel at IAD.

Agreed. Used to go into DCA prior to 9/11 in the Citation, and I never lost any sleep when we couldn't go back.

I'll third that (I think I'm the 3rd)... Don't care if I ever have to go back in there. And yes, by the time you go through all of the proposed hassles it would be just as quick to land IAD and drive.

This is of no real success and essentially accomplishes nothing, but it is probably in the hope that it makes our legislature LOOK like they've accomplished something.

Here is a question: Who is going to pay to fly Mr. Armed Officer back to his gateway airport? Me? The government?

Yeah, my boss will go for this nonsense. Added expense of having to stop at a gateway airport. Getting financially raped by Signature DCA. Yup...IAD works just fine!

How about a GA only airport a little closer than IAD, but not as close as DCA.

I know we are not going to stop and cop!

Yeah, my owner would just love to have a scintillating conversation with whatever cop the TSA dredged up to fly these flights. IAD works. Not gonna F... with it.TC

I was just commenting that flying to a "gateway" airport, having all you luggage, bags, whatever removed....screened, and then flying with security to DCA, can't be more convenient. I would just rather fly to IAD get in the car, limo, cab and go. I didn't think that IAD was that bad. I've seen a lot worse....PVD comes to mind.

Construction delays at IAD all summer. Increased pax traffic on commercial airliners. I just love the way Piedmont has me park over on the cargo ramp, everytime I show up. Going to Washington blows.

I know that my boss is going to want go to DC, he has told me he is tired of the drive, the taxi & departure delays. I just need to figure out if any of his security folks will qualify as the LEO.

I would put $50 down and bet the 12 "Gateways" had a hand in designating themselves as such. Another $50 that there is only one FBO on the field at these Gateways; and A hot 'nother $50 the ramp and landing fees for this 'privilage' are well over $100 total.

I saw an interview on either CNN or MSNBC last night with some "official" from the TSA. He kept throwing the term "Federal Air Marshal" around, instead of LEO. A buddy of mine that is a FAM today said that they've heard conflicting stories on whether it will be FAMs or not. I think it's one of the things they have yet to decide. In any case, the regs are completely stupid, and I hope my company says screw DCA.

I've seen the list of gateways, and I'd say at least half of them have numerous FBO's....but I bet the FBO that can be used will be specified by the TSA.

I'm sure if you look at the list of people that were involved in this whole BS program you will see that they are from these gateway areas.

List of gateway airports

According to TSA’s plan, GA operators may only fly into DCA from twelve “Gateway” airports. The Gateway airports are: Seattle-Tacoma, Wash.; Boston Logan; Houston Hobby; White Plains, N.Y.; LaGuardia, New York; Chicago Midway; Minneapolis/St.Paul, Minn.; West Palm Beach, Fla.; San Francisco, Calif.; Teterboro Airport, N.J.; Philadelphia, Pa.; and Lexington, Ky. Each of the Gateway airports, with the exception of Teterboro, has a TSA presence and is equipped with TSA screeners. Teterboro Airport will use screeners from Newark Airport, N.J.
