FedEx hopeful of pilot deal soon: exec
Wednesday May 10, 11:10 pm ET
By Nick Carey NEW YORK (Reuters) - Package delivery company FedEx Corp. (NYSE:FDX - News) is hopeful of a successful conclusion to talks with its pilots' union after more than two years without a deal, a top executive said on Wednesday. "We think we have put together a good package for the pilots," corporate vice president for strategic financial planning and analysis James Hudson told Reuters on the sidelines of a transportation conference organized by investment bank Bear Stearns in New York.
"We are hopeful we will be able to reach an agreement that will be fair to the pilots, their families, our customers, our company and our shareholders," he added.
FedEx and the union representing its 4,700 pilots are due to start federally mediated talks next week. Negotiations on a new contract began in March 2004.
Before Hudson arrived at the conference, more than a dozen union pilots in full uniform staged a protest outside Bear Stearns' offices, bearing placards saying "FedEx has failed to deliver."
Pilots' union spokesman Wes Reed said the main sticking points for an agreement with FedEx focused on work rules, job security, retirement and health care.
"We have made significant concessions since the last round of talks in the fall," Reed said. "We would now like to see FedEx meet us halfway."
He added that if a deal is not forthcoming, the union would likely seek to be excused from the talks hosted by the National Mediation Board, a step that could lead to strike action.
FedEx has said its offer includes raising the average pilot's salary to more than $200,000 per year from about $183,000.
FedEx's main rival United Parcel Service Inc. (NYSE:UPS - News) also has been holding talks with its 2,700 pilots. Those negotiations have dragged on since October 2002.
UPS Chief Financial Officer Scott Davis said at the conference on Wednesday that the Federal Mediation Board has not announced a date for a fresh round of talks, after the federal mediator called a recess in December. At that time the mediator declined a request from the pilots to be excused from talks with UPS.
Like FedEx, UPS has repeatedly said that it has proposed a fair deal for its pilots.

183K? A few months ago it was 175K. Must be all those dudes picking stuff up in open time and selling back vacation that are bringing up the "average."

What is this? Have we covered this before on flightinfo.com?

You must really not like it over at SWA because your pointy nose is always in FedEx discussions.

SWA/FO...those are trips that the company and our sig team cannot agree on for whatever reason...eg..multi-leg international trip... questionable rest periods...day-night switching...etc...and they put them into open time....they do not get put into the bidpack...so pilots are not supposed to pick them up or trade for them so reserves usually fly them...but idiots will pick them up and that shows the company that pilots are willing to fly those trips and if they do it enough they will end up as regular trips....basically guys are picking up bad trips and it hurts us all in the end...something like that...and you would know all of this if you would have passed the fdx sim eval...good thing the swa eval was easier..hahahah

No, that was a good question and entirely appropriate.

It's Fedex's turn to gloat. After years of putting up with questions like "so are you going to become a real airline pilot someday," they deserve a few years in the limelight.....lol

I passed the sim made it to day 2 and then they didn't like me. See CaptMark, I got some A300 time too...

An open letter to the HOMOs that like to attack me for any reason - it was a simple question. Don't be such a$$es when you don't have to. I'm sorry you feel the need to pick on me and my Company - just because your sad where you ended up.

SW F/O asked a legitimate question and Capt Mark you showed the kindness I would expect a 10 star senior member to convey to a 5 star senior member. Unlike a few of the other non-star non-senior members.

He's just mad that he got turned down at FedEx.

Ha ha ha ha.......yup!

On another note, can you FedEx guys/gals share any rumors on your contract? The word at UPS is that our FO pay won't even be what yours is now. I am just curious what the word at FedEx is. Thanks.
