I am hoping to get an interview with WASINC here in the next month (already completed the phone screening) and was wondering if anybody could tell me about the company. Specifically, someone who currently is flying for them or has in the past. I am interested in the job but looking at some of the past threads on this board I am a little reserved.

Are pilots who work there happy? How are the current relations at the company with other JALways contract companies? What is the best way to prepare for the interview? What are the pay scales like after year 1? Upgrade time? Do they ask anything technical at all?

many many questions...

any help?

Here's what I got off of our Dalpa website:

Some interesting facts:

* Japan is the second largest aviation market in the world.
* Japan Airlines Group (JAL) is the 4th largest airline in terms of revenue in the world.
* Japan Airlines is the largest airline outside the United States.
* Japan Airlines has NEVER laid off a pilot (yes – this includes 9-11 and the SARS epidemic).
* Captain Upgrades are now occurring after two (2) years on the line.
* A 5-year captain for JALways makes more than a 12-year wide-body captain for UAL.
* The Japanese Government will allow you to fly until 65, however you must be able to complete your first 3-year contract (after training) prior to reaching age 60.

Please review the requirements for this job at www.wasinc.net under the employment tab. If you are interested in applying for this job, please hit the “Apply for this Job” link and complete your application.

For those who are interested AND meet/exceed all the above requirements, please contact us via the application site or e-mail to [email protected].

If invited for an interview, WASINC will provide - at no cost to you -confirmed space travel to/from DEN, Lodging, one (1) SIM training session and one (1) SIM evaluation session.

The training commitment is for $30K not $25K. The pay has changed and will go up again in April. You are paid a 60 hr min during training now and that is to keep it in line with the other contract pilot suppliers like HACS. They do let you fly as Capt and currently it takes appx 3yrs after training if the nationals think you can handle it. They do not mix crews. Meaning they have JAL crews and JALWays crews and there is no mixing of crews. i.e. Japanese capt/ WASINC F/O. You will get to fly with other contract capt's as F/O.

Bye Bye--General Lee

It's a sweet gig. But a lot of astronauts fail the physical... ;)

If you think you know what being "anal" is, interviewing and training with JAL will give it a whole new dimension. Just be prepared. Attitude is everything.TC

>Are pilots who work there happy?

I am happy.... at least

>How are the current relations at the company with other JALways contract companies?

Bad...

>What are the pay scales like after year 1?

2yr FO $111/hr 60hrs guarantee

>Upgrade time?

Two years

Yeah, I got the email last week asking me to update my stuff. Wondering what the pay is like for a 7-10 year stretch (Year 1-10 pay). Can't find it at airlinepilotpay.com.

Additionally, do you usually block more than the 60 hours guarantee or is guarantee about what you can really expect for hours and pay?

Thanks.

Bye Bye--General Lee

This is from a guy I know who works for WASINC.

Pretty interesting, but to set some records straight:

>>Japan Airlines has NEVER laid off a pilot (yes – this includes 9-11 and the SARS epidemic).<<
However they are in the process of simply not re-hiring a substantial number of pilots on the DC-10. Since you only have a series of 3 year contracts, I suppose that in a disingenuous sense they are not furloughing anybody, but the guys on the street with no money probably are not drawing such careful distinctions. Further, this is not a union job for the gaijin. The first bent metal, tire in mud, etc.: all gaijin will be GONE.

>>Captain Upgrades are now occurring after two (2) years on the line.<<
Unfortunately, since it take on average 6 months to upgrade 2 individuals (see my post in files section for the insanity of J Training), guys hiring now at the tail of the hiring boom will be looking at 40+ guys on top of them, so do that math.

>>A 5-year captain for JALways makes more than a 12-year wide-body captain for UAL.<<
Please pause as I control my laughter. When you go to left seat you start over at year 1 Captain pay. So what they are saying is when you upgrade (say, 4 or so years for new guys) and then you spend 5 years in the left seat (9 total) you will make more than a UAL wide-body Captain, which unfortunately, is still false. The pay rate per flight hour is higher, true, but see here in Japan you are not paid for pesky duties such as training in the simulator, or the annual ditching class, etc., or CRM class, or the endless briefings, or your "Standby" reserve day (though if you miss it you will be charged vacation to the tune of 3 flight hours), etc., etc., etc. I did the math, and our 1st year Captain flight pay of $154 an hour equals a UAL payrate of around $120 an hour. So, what is the definition of is?

>>The Japanese Government will allow you to fly until 65, however you must be able to complete your first 3-year contract (after training) prior to reaching age 60.<<
Return to the right seat, but the astronaut physicals required of us every 6 months are battened down even tighter on these guys, and so far no one has made it past 62 without waving a white flag.
