Be honest.....we are amongst friends here. Why all the sick calls? were you sick? was your wife or kids sick? or did you just want the weekend off for the concert or party?

Be honest with us. If it helps, I know many guys that really abused sick time and are now captains at JB, SWA and FOs at DAL, UAL and CAL.

My thought, is if you abuse sick time, and it costs the airline money, they will say whatever it takes to get rid of you.

give us all a break. Sick time is a negotiated benefit and it should be used as such. I can't believe the company guys who retire with a couple thousand hours of sick time in the bank, unless they can cash it out. Since when did airlines start hiring such shameles squares...lol....?

My advice to the original poster is stop asking/admitting things on this board. There are several management pilots on here who handle recruiting for their prospective airlines. You called in sick and your company tried to intimidate you into not doing it again. They cannot legally disclose that to Cal. if they do you have a lawsuit on your hands and won't need a job in this ridiculous industry anymore.....

Vacation time is a benefit. 401k match is a benefit. Company paid uniforms is a benefit. Medical/Dental insurance is a benefit. Sick time is a form of insurance to protect you when you cannot come to work. When you call in sick it costs the company money.

At JB, they figured out that if given sick time, it will be abused, so they dont get sick time or vacation time, they only get Paid Days Off.

No, I am not managment, and dont always agree with management. I was brought up to have a good work ethic....you know "an honest days pay for an honest days work".

How many of you guys have been "extended" of "junior manned"? Did you like it? You can thank those that abuse the sick call policy.

Carry on with your debate, but understand that sick time is NOT a benefit, but a form of insurance.

I left Flyi with over 150 hrs in my sick bank. Man do I regret that.

The only thing I will say is that having some sick time in your bank will make it a lot easier if you get really sick or injured and can't work for a few weeks.

I never thought it was too responsible to voluntarily sickation myself down to 5 or 10 hours with a family to take care of, but that's just my opinion.

I've just seen too many guys not able to collect any pay because there bank is empty.

The sick were were all legit w/doc notes....My 4yr old goes to daycare and brings home everything..also I had a pinched nerve that was the majority of the calls and had doc notes w/them. Went to therapy and Im better now w/no issues. I know what ur saying about abuse..I know some guys too that do that..proud to say Im not one of them....

Our industry is full of sick calls. We all understand how it works.

Really all they can ask is to verify your employment, and confirm your training records, as was in a prior post.

Usually, these requests go to a different department than where your letters are located anyway.

I wouldn't worry about it.

As much as we don't like it, you are correct... except when they announce ther are gonna furlough my butt, it immediately becomes a benefit!

Here is my question are you from Expressjet? If not than I agree with everyone they can't find out these type of details.

However if you are Expressjet and although it is illegal I do have reason to believe because CAL and Expressjet use CCS, (same computer scheduling system that CAL and CAL management can and does access) CAL has sometimes checked the amount of sick time of those coming from Expressjet. Also I have reason to believe the EWR CPO at CAL and EWR CPO at Expressjet talk about individuals.

I agree if you can put a positive spin and specifically talk about your legitimate sick leave usage you should be OK. But if you don't and they know your sick leave hours level and how often you called in sick you may be in a bad situation.

Not fair just the way it is, for example I am a 20 year pilot and I called in sick today at 1:30 AM five hours before my show time. The scheduler says hay it's a short notice sick call, I say well I am still sick period. I get a short notice sick leave on my schedule and to preempt the call from the CPO I go to the EWR CAL medical clinic and get a note confirming my illness and agreeing I shouldn't fly with ear block.

This company uses sick leave as an indication of employee loyalty and it's total BS. Some pilots actually fly sick because of it. Number one requirement for check airman and sim instructors candidates is amount of sick bank hours, last requirement best pilots for the positions.

I know some people worry about this but I came from Express and I can tell you many people went to CAL who had sick calls over every vacation and were on multiple steps of discipline. So I highly doubt they can view it, and even if they can apparently it doesn't matter.

I think the correct answer is it depends on who you interview with and where. If you interview in the EWR CPO it does matter. If you interview in IAH and you have management pilots that aren't chief pilots it may not.

On another note, sick time is and should be used as a schedule improvement tool. At most places it is merely negotiated, paid time off. Airlines love to get emotional about it.

Call out early and often.[/quote]
You should have told that to the interview panel when you interviewed at FedEX.
