Volume control for Telex 5x5

I've heard several times about a volume control from Radio Shack that can be adapted for use on the Telex 5x5. I've done a search of the forums but can't find anything. Can someone let me know what to look for when I go to Radio Shack? Thanks!

I'll save you a few bucks. Take the top screw out. The one that holds on the clip. Under that on the side there is a little circle. Its just a sticker. Take that off. In there is a little screw that will change the valume/squelch of the unit. It is very sensitive though. So you will only need a very slight turn. This will help with the hiss. From the squelch break. In other words you may have to talk louder to key up. It might take a few stabs at it to get it just right. Be very careful poking around in there this thing has some very small fragile wires. The tones of the master warnings and things like that are very loud if your mold is fitted well. To solve this you can put a little lambs wool in the tube. Not too much. Poke it down in with a tooth pick. Once again a little tinkering will get this just right. Cotten will work too. This is what audiologist do with older style earing aids. At least that is what one told me. This should take care of all the chimes from the aircraft, and not distort human voices too much. Had mine for 6 years now and love it. I have had to twick it for the different fleet types as I changed fleets.PM me if you have anymore question.

I was using the Telex 5x5 in the ERJ. Take the headset to Radio Shack, show it to them, and ask for a volume adaptor. It kind of looks like those lamp cords that have the little rotating thumb switch built into the cord. You will also need to buy a plug adaptor for it also. The whole thing will run you about $10-15. It will get rid of the ear-piercing chimes and alerts in the cockpit.

If you want to adjust the gain, do what Skyway said with taking off the clip and adjusting the screw.

After that, it should work pretty good!!

Do it the right way. They are called "stints" and go in the tube between the earpiece and the unit. They are little silver filters about the size of a grain of rice. I have 2 in mine. More stints = less volume.

Thanks for the advice. The gain's already adjusted, so that's not a problem. What's a problem is the master cautions and master warnings, and the cabin when the FA calls. They are much louder than the normal settings for the radio and the interphone. The 5x5 doesn't have a master volume control for the cabin interphone or the warning/cautions, so those are at an ear-splitting level.

WN: The stints are coming in this week with the earmolds and the Y-adapter. By the way, if you're on the decision board in a couple of weeks, I'd be a GREAT addition to WN!

Five minutes before I read this post, I told my wife how much I'd spent on the set, with ear molds included. You should see the look on her face now after I read this post to her.
