I you look at the back of your certificate, "SIC" privileges is a restriction to the type rating. That's not generally how we think about it but I think technically you can have a type rating with the SIC restriction.
 
Plenty of union represented airline pilots ride to work on VA from lower cost of living areas to their bases in SFO and LAX as well. Give them the option of riding on their own company or VA and you can bet they are gonna take VA.
As for your jumpseat idea....spend that effort on grammer school.
