CA disability (for you, the employee for your own disability) is 55%. Paid family leave is on a different scale also based on wages. Yes, they both come from the tax you pay that is mandated by state law. http://www.edd.ca.gov/disability/FAQs.htm

That's horse crap. I shouldn't have to pay so some guy or gal can spend time at home bonding with their baby. Yes, it's available to me if I find myself in that situation, but I'm perfectly okay without it. How long will this crap last in CA, this state is getting more and more broke. Did you know on some paychecks on first year pay at VX, I was actually losing MORE to SUI/SDI than I was to California state income tax! Priceless!

Hey, don't shoot the messenger. Write your elected officials. I have nothing to do with California law! I was just trying to clarify. I will retreat now.

Baby bonding leave helps build a stronger society. A small investment now saves money in the long run. Plus, it's the civilized thing to do. We need to take better care of each other. If you want to live like a frontiersman in the Wild West move to Texas or Mexico.

Social security and medicare are also to try and build a stronger society and a small investment for the long run. Unfortunately, the models will go broke. CA is broke. Imagine what they could do if they could do away with the SUI/SDI and instead take a portion of that into state taxes. Food stamps, wellfare, social security, and medicare are all civilized things to do. However, handouts can only last so long, especially when you consider the FACT that more and more people are getting turned onto government handout monies and not enough people working to pay into the system. Of those who work, they are earning less than they did for the same job 10 years ago.

I know, you're right. I appreciate the info on the other states that have mandatory deductions as well. Thank you, I learned something.
