Anyone know if you ve been perscribed vicodin....and of course take it...should I not work a certain time after being off of vicodin...so I dont fail a drug test?

The Dr.(not an AME) said I should be completly off of it for 24 hours before going back to work...

any thoughts or input?

Thanks!!!

You should be completely off of it for 24 hours before going back to work.

The "fail a drug test" should not be a concern.

If it was legally prescribed (to you), then you are allowed to take it, and therefore it may be indicated in a drug test.

The Medical Officer at the drug lab (a physician) will call you if the results are positive. You tell them that you were prescribed Vicodin, they verify it. No Problemo.

As previously stated, you don't want to be under the effects when flying.

The half-life of Vicodin is 3.8 hours. Every 3.8 hours the drug is metabolized and half of it is excreted.

If you take 10 mg:

After 3.8 hrs. you'll have 5 mgs. in your system.

3.8 hrs later (7.6 hrs from dose), you'll have 2.5 in your system.

3.8 hrs. later (11.4) hrs from dose), you'll have 1.25 left in your system.

...and so on.

Every drug has a half-life and from it you can determine how much of a particular drug is still in your system.

Drugs with very short half-lifes, produce the most severe withdrawals, due to the rapid excrection of the substance from your system and the recalibration your body undergoes as it compensates for the change in chemistry the drug induced.

Amish,

You not only know what Vicodin is, but can calculate the half-life?

I think I'm in love.

As for the Vicodin, just to be safe I'd wait 48 hours to fly (just in case there is a surprise drug test), but you should have no effects mentally or physically after 24. Even if it is prescribed to you, and you have a positive drug test, who needs the headache??

Until then, enjoy,

The Naughty Nurse

Have a normal prescription for it and use it as needed. Have had 2 AME's and the FAA Aeromedical Division clarify that is the same as alcohol 8 hours. HOWEVER--- if you have un-normal side effects after taking it you CANNOT fly until they subside-just like a hangover, I take them right up to 8 hours and they do not bother me. Everyone's body is diffrent though.

I hate those things. When the dentist prescribes them, I eat Advil instead. Codeine makes me really nauseous and left feeling stiff.

Vicodin scrambles my short term memory. My wife laughs at me because I'll repeat something I said or screw up a recolection from the previous day when I'm on a course of it.

I sleep great.

Any night time drivers take Ambien? Any horror stories? Drug tests? Heard alot of AME's are scriptin it for us box drivers. Fact or fiction? Tylenol PM aint cuttin it anymore.

Ambien is now disqualifying.

It should be! My doctor prescribed it to me,and I only took one - and that was one too many!! It made me sleepwalk. And my kids said I got them up and yelled at them for no reason. I had no recollection the next day. My kids got a good laugh out of it, though. I never took the stuff again.

About the Tylenol PM - May as well take nothing at all. That stuff is useless. Same can be said for Advil PM, Excedrin PM, etc. They are all worthless. Of course they are nothing more than OTC pain relievers with main ingredient in Benadryl added.

Best sleep I did get one night was in a hotel where they had the Serta Perfect Sleeper - best mattress ever. I think that will be my next purchase for a good night's sleep.

I've always had my eye on a Tempur-Pedic mattress and pillow set. Very comfortable but expensive. Anyone have one of these at home and how do they like it?

I've always wondered the same thing. I can tell you that another hotel I stayed in had the "lower end" sleep number bed. I was NOT impressed. I mean, I've had worse mattresses, but this was definitely not worth the price. I think I had more back and muscle pains the next morning.

So, I'm with Amish on this one..... Any owners out there that can give a thumps up or thumbs down on this one? Are those TemperPedics worth the extra $$'s?

Tempur-Pedic

I've had one for about a year, and really like it. You don't need a box spring, or even a bed, for that matter! I just placed it in my old waterbed frame. I think there are some cheaper "memory-foam" mattresses available, but don't know if they are as good.

I know a pilot who was taking Ambien that jumped out of the hotel window in the middle of the night. We didn't know if it's a suicide, sleep walking or side effect of Ambien.
