Has anyone ever, or know someone who has successfully used their degree in aviation to get out of the industry and get a good job doing something else? Or is it pretty much a given that you have to get a new degree or skill?

You could try aviation insurance underwriting, or brokerage. With AIG in the tank, their competitors like Allianz, Global Aerospace, Associated Aviation Underwriters, Phoenix, United States Aircraft Insurance Group. Brokerages like Marsh Mac, etc...

Once you get settled in, get them to pay for your MBA, or CPCU.

I've often thought that maybe I could use my degree in aviation to get into the railroads. I mean, it's all transportation. But after applying numerous times I constantly get rejection letters.

Not many pilots, but I've known more than one A+P to get a job outside the industry using their licenses/degree.

i went to a job fair last week (non-aviation) and they had no clue what my aviation degree was. I did talk to a bus liner though, they were interested.
