Can some one tell me why it is that on many US airliners, the US flag is painted facing the right direction on one side of the aircraft and on the other side of the aircraft it is facing backwards? This has always seemed odd to me. Some one please explain this to me.

actually they are both facing the correct direction. the proper way to paint a flag on an aircraft is so its flying in the wind as it would if it was really made out of cloth and on a flag pole.

the "pole" side is upwind and the other end of the flag is downwind as the aircraft flys.
