US Airways Needs New Recovery Plan

12/10/2004

Bloomberg News reports that US Airways Group Inc., the seventh-largest U.S. airline, can't attract backing of $250 million needed to avoid liquidation and emerge from bankruptcy under its current recovery plan, the former chief financial officer said yesterday.

Proposed labor cuts, cost deferrals and other measures in the plan won't be enough to keep company losses below $200 million in 2005 and attract equity investment needed to reorganize, David Davis, US Airways' former chief financial officer, told Judge Stephen S. Mitchell of U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

The company is in talks about a rescue plan with an unspecified number of potential investors, senior vice president Chris Chiames said during a break in the hearing.

Davis testified during hearings on the airline's bid to cancel labor contracts with three unions and impose new terms. US Airways said last week that it could be forced to liquidate by mid-January without $950 million in wage, job and benefit cuts to help cut $1.5 billion from annual spending and stem losses.

US Airways sought court approval to throw out contracts with unions for flight attendants, mechanics and baggage handlers, and customer-service and reservation agents after failing to agree on concessions.

The Communications Workers of America, representing customer-service and reservation agents, authorized leaders to call a strike if the court throws out its contract, and the Association of Flight Attendants is voting on a similar motion.

US Airways has said that a strike would force it to shut down.

Mitchell said on Dec. 2 that he isn't likely to rule on the request before January

Doesn't sound good at all.... Good thing Siegel walked away with $8-9 million and Wolf bagged $25 million a few years back.

I just wonder "who" these potential investors are?. It seems a little unrealistic at this point that more than a few would be willing to dump much money into something that may or may not succeed. Would be nothing short of a rather large gamble.

Sad sad situation for all Airways folks. I had dinner with an Airways check airman this past week who is now looking at FedEx and who has had enough of this. Not good but this seems to typlify the overall attitude of many there.

I guess when you have seen such a good thing go sour for so long one must know when enough is enough.

And that while my pension fund was terminated with me getting pennies on the dollar. What a douche bag thing to say. Whose side are you on anyway ?

Those guys should be in prison for what they did, especially Wolf. He used over $1 Billion in company cash to buy back stock in order to inflate the price so that his 8 million options would remain valuable. Then he suckered that moron at United to agree to buy the company for $60.00 a share, with a $50 million payment to him, Rakesh, and Nagin if the deal fell through.

It's really great the people like Wolf, Siegal, et al can play with and ruin people's lives in order to line their own pockets with cash.

Not to cheapen the plight of the folks at Airways because you guys/gals are going through a lot, but I have to ask the question..

With the different groups in negotiations and mgmt asking the court to abrogate the contracts there is something missing from this round of concessions. Where is Bronner????

Everytime there are negotiations he spews forth his mantra 'Accept this deal or I'll liquidate!!' I cannot count how many times I've heard this during the year. This time he has not said a word. Actually, he has been frightenly quiet. Either he realizes the F/A's are ready to call his bluff this time or he has already made up his mind... Ugh.

Hey Typhoonpilot,

You flying the 777 at US Airways? I didn't know they had them? If no, then how did you get that gig? Are you flying overseas somewhere?

Thanks

Hey T, I agree with you 100%. But I'll never forget that it was the USAirways ALPA MEC who voted (without you or I having a say in the matter) to terminate our pension plan. They are just as culpable in this tragedy, IMHO, by constantly "enabling" these corporate buffoons.

typhoon--I think Six was being sarcastic. Just a little less so than my message was... :) TC

Typhoonpilot flies the 777 as a Capt for Emirates out of Dubai, somewhere Southwest does not fly to---yet. He used to fly for USAir. I would say he has done a lot better for himself.

Bye Bye--General Lee

If so, I apologize for my rant. He might try using this " " smiley next time so that he isn't misunderstood.

General Lee has it right. I'm in a much better place now, but the loss of the pension still hurts.

And is completely unnacceptable and disgusting. Your MEC and the ALPA national officers should be drawn and quartered for allowing that.
