If US Airways costs are lower than Southwests now, why dont they regroup and start flying point to point against them and lean away from the old hub and spoke system and make some money from it?

Because,

#1 Current managment are idiots.
#2 They have no idea what you just said...point to what??
#3 They are lucky to even find their own privates much less anything else.

Oops Nevermind, Thats all wrong, its the employees fault!!!

USAir is dead....it just hasn't been buried yet. I hate to see it, but your question is just the very teenie tiny tip of the iceburg.

We were asking that same question of managment 4 years ago(point to Point), What was their response.......Metrojet. (See #1) Metrojet really didnt effect Southwest, since it never competed with it, However it really put a hurting on USAirways out of LGA and BOS. We really kicked USAirways butt out of those citie.......oh wait......Metrojet was USairways........hang on .....what kind of idiot would put a low cost carrier into their own high revenue cities where no other LCC exists??!!!???..............HEY WHOS RUNNING THIS TRAINWRECK ANYHOW!!!!!!!!!!

The labor costs are pretty close, it is the rest of the pie that makes the difference. ALPA has been quoting that for the first half of 2003, USAirways spent 38 cents of every revenue dollar to pay for labor while SWA was at 40 cents. The pilots share of those total labor costs were 13 cents at US and 12 at SWA. Currently, an SWA 12 year Capt. makes 8 percent more per hour than a pilot in the same position at US.

Obviously, the CASM difference between the two carriers comes from the operational and structural differences. I don't know the figure for US, but it is still not anywhere near SWA which I think is in the 7.5 to 7.7 CASM range.

I believe U is at 10.5 to 11 cents a seat mile.TC

UAIR's costs aren't even in the ballpark with SWA's. Some LABOR costs may be close, but that's about it. The debt load alone has to be killing them. The employee costs are such a hot topic because it's the easiest target for inept management.

Shame there is no such thing as a 12 year captain at US. They are all downgraded now.

Some thoughts....

Kerosene snorter,

What an awesome post!! You had me laughing so hard I about bust a gut! Nothing like a good, healthy dose of sarcasm....

91, 100, 100,

Dude, if you are sitting there lusting over a cartoon character you need to get out more! LOL But I will admit to also being a fan of Family Guy. And speaking of Lois Griffin, don't you find it odd that although the storyline has made it clear she comes from a family of WASPs (her husband on the other hand is Catholic), they made her appear so Jewish? What's that all about?

At any rate, when it comes to sex appeal, Lois has nothing on Jane Jetson....or even on Wilma Flintstone for that matter. But hey, what I do know? When I was a little kid I thought Audrey Meadows (as Mrs. Ralph Kramden on The Honeymooners) was hot! But as the Apostle said, now I am a man and have put childish things behind me...so now I am all about Sarah Michelle Gellar. Ho yeah!
