US Airways Group Inc. plans to recall 274 pilots during this year's first half as the carrier replaces departing employees and adds regional jets to its fleet. The recalls include 90 pilots for the new Embraer 190 planes and 184 to fill the slots of those who are retiring or leaving for other reasons, said spokesman Morgan Durrant on Thursday. Those returning to work represent 17 percent of the 1,639 pilots that the carrier has on furlough. US Airways yesterday took delivery of the first of 25 Embraer 190 jets. The carrier will use the 99-seat planes initially to replace larger aircraft on some routes beginning in February. Separately, US Airways flew 5.33 million passengers in December, a 2.6 percent increase from a year ago, mostly from an increase in international flights, the airline said. The airline also filled more of its available seats during the month, or 75.4 percent versus 72.2 percent the year earlier. For the full year, US Airways filled 78.3 percent of its seats, versus 76.1 percent for 2005. Capacity for the year, however, had fallen by 7.6 percent from levels in 2005, and the passenger count dropped 7.7 percent to 66.1 million.
