US Airways faces a formidable challenge as it prepares for Southwest's invasion of its profitable Philadelphia hub. To compete, USA TODAY reported Thursday that US Airways is slashing its Philadelphia fares. It's also trying to spruce up its image for Philadelphia travelers, reminding them that its global service options dwarf Southwest. However true, getting out that message could be quite a challenge, says The Philadelphia Inquirer's Tom Belden. He writes: "The most service and low fares? US Airways knows half of the equation could be a tough sell, given its long history of charging $600 for a 600-mile round trip to Pittsburgh." But the stakes have never been higher for embattled US Airways, which was already driven out of one lucrative East Coast market (Baltimore) by Southwest in the 1990s. Philadelphia is now US Airways's most profitable hub — not to mention the nation's fourth-largest market. Taking no chances, US Airways is also rolling out a number of "acts of kindness" in its fight against Southwest.

Beyond the slashing fares, the carrier's marketing blitz includes teams of employees washing cars for free, delivering free pizzas to office workers, and paying turnpike tolls for motorists. "US Airways has invested millions of dollars in Philadelphia," said Ben Baldanza, senior VP of marketing and planning. "We know the city is excited about Southwest coming, but our general belief... is when fares are the same, people are going to want to fly US Airways. Philadelphia is ours to lose, and we don't plan to lose it." Southwest mounted its own three-day assault with TV ads and giveaways such as Styrofoam drink holders with the airline's logo.

The simple fact that it took management THIS long to realize the trouble they were in is why Airways is doomed.

DEAD MAN WALKIN'

is it just me, or does Lakefield sound like a retard on the weekly update? Reading a Q-Card must be too dificult for him. Not alot of confidence in his voice either..

Are they trying to save an airline or run a high school band fundraiser?

Hey, are they recalling the furloughees to wash cars? The update said something about washing customers cars... too funny.

Maybe they can wash a couple of 737s...

Did it say who would be washing the cars? The invasion of PHL is near.

Not really sure they can be successful at either . . .

quote: are they trying tu run an airline...........

they probably hired the bozos that advertise in their inflight magazine and they paid him 100,000 grand to tell them, to:
deliver pizzas, wash cars and pay turnpike tolls

If it wasn't such a sad situation, it would almost be funny.

car wash

I heard the male flight attendants are wearing hot pants and knee high white boots while they wash the cars.

He11 come to my apartment wash my car and dirty clothes and I'd jumpseat to PHL just to take a trip on USAir.
Man my laundry smells:D

Jobear

My car is clean enough but, man does my grass need cutting! Anyone? Anyone? USAIR? Anyone?

Go Get Em Herbie!!

I wonder how many ex-USAirways people SWA will hire in about a year or 2 when Lakefield takes U down for the final countdown?

All Herbie, Colleen and Jim P have to do is stick with their game plan and they rule PHL in under 2 years just like BWI.

But first things first for the Texas Outlaws....settle the Flight Attendant contract and get back to bidness.

One final thought to ponder.....

What if Piedmont was still here and wasn't bought out by U? Where would this industry be right now? Think about that?

Would Piedmont would still have BWI right now?

If Piedmont was here, things would be different. I was there & watched USAir screw up the entire operation.

Piedmont had a Florida Shuttle; F28s flying to about 8 FL cities. It was profitable 2 months after it was established. USAir dismanteled it & Comair got some of the routes.....SWA has a lot of them today.

PSA was purchased.....only to abandon the West Coast.....where SWA now flies most of the same routes.

They used to have over 40 gates in BWI.....now they have 4, and SWA is building a new terminal there.

The USAir Management has never figured it out. Ed Colody bought Piedmont because Carl Icaan was about to buy USAir. Ed was force to "build" a major carrier, and it has always been run like it was Allegeheny, the regional that pre-dates USAir. Now they're back to Regional size, & still don't have a plan.

Herb always had a plan & he & Colleen are sticking with it. Plus, a 7 cent CASM will ALWAYS win over a 12 cent CASM.

Washing your car, or washing your dog ain't gonna cut it. They need to generate revenue. They need a plan, something that's been elusive to them for over 15 years.

There are no rabbits left in the hat.

US Airways Announces 'GoFares,' Its New Permanent Simplified Low Fare Structure
April 29, 2004 07:04:00 AM ET

GoFares Start as Low as $29*; No GoFares More Than $499* Each Way

Employees Take to the Streets in Philadelphia in
Largest Awareness Campaign in Company History

ARLINGTON, Va., April 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- US Airways introduced
the first phase of its new permanent and simplified low fares called
"GoFares(R)" today in Philadelphia, kicking off the largest awareness campaign
in company history. Employees will be performing "unbelievable" acts of
kindness as part of an intense nine-day highly visible promotional campaign to
tell Philadelphians about its new $29 - $499* GoFares. Best of all, there is
no Saturday night stay required to take advantage of these new low fares in
designated markets.
US Airways' new GoFares start at as low as $29* each way, with last-minute
fares as low as $49* each way. GoFares are never more than $499* each way,
and there are no Saturday night stay or roundtrip purchase requirements
typical of leisure-type fares.
"We have heard our customers loudly and clearly. They have told us that
fares are too high, too complicated, and that we need to do something about
that -- and we are," said B. Ben Baldanza, US Airways senior vice president of
marketing and planning. "Low fares are a reality of the marketplace, and US
Airways is adapting to these changing realities. This wave is only the
beginning, as we will continue to roll out GoFares in other markets in the
coming months."
Baldanza added that unlike some of the other low-fare providers that might
require customers to sacrifice a level of service, US Airways offers much
more.

For example, when traveling on US Airways, customers get:
* Advance seat assignments
* Pre-boarding for Preferred Dividend Miles members
* A First Class cabin with the ability to upgrade from Coach Class on many
fares
* In-Flight Cafe on select flights
* Ability to earn frequent flier miles for travel to and from more than
700 worldwide destinations through US Airways' participation in the Star
Alliance beginning May 4.
Employees will be on the streets of Philadelphia with thousands of giveaways and can be seen washing cars, feeding parking meters, and paying for gasoline, to name just a few of the many community activities planned over the course of the next nine days. These events will "pop up" throughout the area without advance notice as acts of appreciation for loyal US Airways customers and to call attention to the new GoFares. After the kickoff week, additional activities will follow in the weeks and months to come. ONE-WAY 'GOFARES' TO/FROM PHILADELPHIA STARTING MAY 2004*

Some of the airports that customers might visit also charge up to $4.50 for passing through, but the total is capped at $18 per trip.

** Highest walkup fare charged before the implementation of GoFares

US Airways has many other airline partners, and a part of a GoFare or any other trip might be on one of the partner's airplanes. These GoFares are available for travel on the US Airways Express carriers Allegheny, Air Midwest, Chautauqua, Colgan, Mesa, MidAtlantic Airways, Piedmont, PSA, Shuttle America or Trans States. A flight also might be operated by a Star Alliance partner United Airlines(R). For all of the details about GoFares, including a few other restrictions, please go to usairways.com.

Seasonal service to Dublin and Shannon and new service to Glasgow operates between May and October.

Oh I get it now. USAir management wants more concessions to subsidize these fares which will make them bleed even more.

What brilliant leadership.
