US Airways/America West deal is imminent

That's according to The Philadelphia Inquirer (free registration), which says the airlines "appear to be just days away from announcing plans to merge." Neither airline would comment on the report, but several prominent industry experts say they expect an announcement by next week. The combined carrier would be the sixth-biggest U.S. airline, passing current No. 6 Southwest while providing the discount giant with a formidable new low-fare rival. But UBS Warbug analyst Robert Ashcroft says Southwest could actually try to scuttle the merger by making a bid for some of the assets of bankrupt US Airways. It was just a few months ago that Southwest rival AirTran tried to build a hub at Chicago Midway by acquiring gates from bankrupt ATA. But Southwest — flush with cash — effectively thwarted that attempt by outbidding AirTran for this gates in bankruptcy court proceedings. Another potential hang-up: Merging union seniority lists. "Pilots especially are very territorial with their seniority," said Roger King, an airline analyst with CreditSights. Posted 7:15 a.m.

This industry gets more interesting every day.

The AWA shareholders' meeting is on the 17th and rumor has it they want the "deal" announced prior to it.

Why did I go to school to be a pilot. As an airline CEO I could get a lot more money to make bad business decisions that don't kill 140 people at a time. What was I thinking?

And maybe I can get a bankrupt carrier to buy us at Alaska. We already have bankrupt wages and low morale. Hey Tilton, are you reading this?

TWAdude--Remember--merge according to "career expectations". DOH went out the door with Delta/PanAm...

Good luck.TC

Lot's of luck to East meets West.......

Usairways gets a chance to ruin yet another perfectly good airline..... Lets see there was the old Piedmont, the old PSA, Allegheny and now America West!

Actually with all (well most) of my sarcasms aside , I think this might actually work, the route structure will be fantastic. I just hope the smarter management team (meaning America West) offers most of the suggestions regarding the merge, because U is currently being run by a team of idiots, of course I mean that with all do respect........................

I'm taking bets - how many cactus drivers will slit their wrists after the first time they fly into PHL under the US Airways banner.

TWA Dude Are you still an active glider pilot and where do you do your soaring? Havent done much lately but plan to borrow the old mans bird in CO later this spring.......

I want to slit my wrists EVERY time I fly thru PHL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's so fitting, America's most f@#K'd up airline hubbing out of America's most f@#K'd up airport!

TC: of course DOH does us no good compared to USAir. The good news is it looks like we're getting a couple of ex-TWA guys on our Merger Committee and Nego.

Captzaahlle: no soaring recently, although we got really low on fuel holding for JFK the other week so I was ready.

I heard an America West pilot tell the ground controller at SEA the other day when asked about the merger:

"It's like marrying a corpse!"

This is going to be ugly. It will be interesting to see how AWA is going to magically make all the debt and attitude problems (well deserved) vanish.

Anyone happen to read this gem of an article about further backdoor deals for U managemnt to line their pockets?

Another example of why you do not continue to give pay cuts to "save" your company.
