Bird strikes at night are pretty rare.

There is a big difference in the number of birds strikes between day and night.

Personally, I would have armed the .50 cals and blasted them.

I'm not shocked in the least. The way he double checked the jet to make sure all the souls were off the aircraft and safe were quite indicative of Air Force officers. This is why an Air Force trained pilot is always a catch.

Actually, the Captain being the last one off the plane probably had more to do with company training after the last USAIR jet went in the water leaving LGA ('89).

But, in all seriousness, Great job by the crew!
