Have a friend who's buddy was recently hired at UPS and went in directly as a captain. Since when did UPS start hiring street captains and why do they have the need for that? Are their current pilots bypassing upgrades or maybe they have some really high mins for upgrade?

Get rid of this friend. This one is lying to you.

However..................you may get hired as a management pilot if your quals are right.

Umm...yeah...right

Your friend was probably hired as a Management Capt. Yes, UPS has been hiring a few off the street. For those of you out there who might think this is the road to "Mecca" in pilot terms... Forget about it! If you know nothing about UPS, know this, they will own you and whatever life you think you might have. Once in the system, you live at the pleasure of UPS and its needs. Im not kidding, Ive seen it first hand by one of the ACP's here I know. (We'll he's in Alaska now) One day your a "Check Airman" in SDF, the next, your going to Alaska to be an ACP. Two years later, RFD, same job or some other title, 1-2 years after that an different destination/different position. I think you have the right to say no to a "re-position" however, you also have no protection for termination if UPS feels your not filling their need, nor will you get promoted up the "management" ladder if you dont "tow the line" with what they ask you to do... Sure you will have plenty of money, but your family life may be effected. Everything here comes at a price, and for here, going to the "Dark Side" (or getting hired directly into management) is the ultimate sacrafice for the greater Brown. I hope your friend isn't married or have kids, long term, his relationship could suffer. He'll never have another holiday off. I'll bet he's former of recent military. Never been a union guy. Good for him if that is truely what he wanted, most people just want to work here and dont realize that being a Management pilot here is not the same as say being one at AA or DAL. Hey, on the positive side, maybe you can get him to write you a LOR.

Thanks, but I don't think I'll give up my number at FedEx to come to UPS, even though it is the only other real flying job left. If you guys go into management do you still keep your seniority number?

Nope!

My buddy who's a 75/767 Captain said you don't "keep or even really get" a seniority number. You're management, and once that, you can never simply "fly the line as a line holder". Unless you quit, and re-apply....You can't cross-back to the line like you can at FedEx....

UPS guys can correct me if my translation is wrong..

But you'll always have that little voice in the back or your head...

tis true. once you commit to the dark side and drink the kool-aid there you will remain (unless the manager/supervisor above you no longer enjoys your company--then its off to ont or rfd or phl or anc or ...or... maybe into instruction or standards or...or...perhaps you quietly leave)

no senority line number is issued. there are advantages though to the postion of said "street captain"--sitting at the desk inside a shared cubicle all day and then sitting night hot. (hey they serve breakfast at 2--yummy--extra oatmeal with brown sugar)

giddy up.

The fact is that without their admittedly great fuel hedge, SWA would too be losing money. FedEx just increases the surcharge when fuel prices rise. SWA is just a glorified regional airline albeit with decent pay and benefits, but by no means do they make big bucks, have great bennies or a great retirement plan. They are also stuck flying a 737 around the lower 48 for their entire career. I could care less if I'm a "real airline pilot", I'll just sit back and enjoy my soon to be big fat pay raise and secure retirement. I guess that by today's standard, then I am not a "real airline pilot" as I work for a profitable, secure company with a bright future.

Maybe if SWA was losing billions of dollars each quarter they also wouldn't have good credit and would not be able to hedge the way they do. Is it their fault they are profitable and have good business sense? Is this turning into a "my airline is better than yours" thread? If you are happy and have a job in this market, you are ahead of many! If you are unhappy and wish you were somewhere else, Flightinfo is always a good place to make yourself feel better. In the meantime, stop making an ass out of yourself.

I really doubt that you are a former military pilot with Fedex. It's a great on line persona Walter, but your flame bait posts sugest that you are just someone in need of attention. Good luck, I'm sure that someone thinks that you are special.

BrownCow,

It was just a shot back at your boy here's comment. I know exactly what a real flying job is. Im sure you do to. Sounds like your boy Penison is alittle unsure of his, having to remind us all about his pension and having one of the only two "real" flying jobs.

Congrats on your pension Penison. Hopefully it will be there when you are done. And I mean that in all sincerity. (sp)

"Real Job???" Im just happy to have any job in the industry. I think the original comment was meant as a joke, I didnt take it too seriously. If it were serious, thats cool, dont apply to cargo haulers. Hell, for me, pax was my first choice, but Cargo called first, Im happy with UPS and not looking for another job, that is unless I decide to get my stuff in over at FedEx. But that is not likely to happen, but you never know, Ill keep my options open... I guess id have to change my name to BigPurpleMC10 or BigPurpleA300... Na, doesnt have the cool ring that BBDC8 has...

Hey Airship, where you working at, I see that you flew UH-60's and Im guessing you fly at US Air/AWA??? Im a former 60 guy... Nice to see a former bubba raisin hell...

Pension, I didnt see your profile so I didnt know you flew for FedEx. sorry, didnt mean to imply a crossover from Purple to Brown... Just for the record, I think SWA is a great place to be. We all have our problems. Glass houses, remember...
