Anybody got any idea if the 31 Jan UPS class is full yet? How long before a class do they let you know that you'll be in it? Is there only one class in Feb? I am dying for any info. THanks....

Dear Dying,

Sorry I don't have any definitive class date info for you, but I can say that 100 (previously announced) new hires this year is just a starting point. Heck we just had a bid for 120 new FO's. UPS is already behind by 20, we're not shrinking! The air side of UPS is growing like gangbusters and we all anticipate more on the order of 250-300 new hires this year and approx 200 a year for several years thereafter. 200 pilots will retire in the next 3 years, there's approx 100 over 60 yr old's on the panel now (at least half will bail after the new contract), 17 acft delivered in '05 and '06 (from previous orders) translates loosely to at least another 170 pilots, Menlo represents approx another 300 pilots (UPS has till 1/06 to bring this flying in house ... LEGALLY), and UPS has yet to announce the next big long-range acft purchase (remember the 37 A-300's that were cancelled + volume growth acft). The above represents a need for AT LEAST another 500-1000 pilots over the next 5-8 years or so (depends on how quickly the additional acft are added ... i.e., 747-400's or 777's or more MD-11's). Company is very tight-lipped about expansion plans.

I can sense you are eager to begin. That's good ... but keep your eye on the big picture also. The door is not likely to swing closed here due to the above. If you are paying attention to financial reports keep your eye focused on the air numbers ... particularly international (typically double digit volume growth) ... this is what dictates acft acquisitions and their time frame.

Hang in there!

Al,

Buddy of mine just got a call yesterday for the January class, he interviewed first part of December. They added 4 slots to the January class, those are all filled. They said no official word on a February add on class, but there's definitely a class in March. They also said this January class was the last class of FE's. Hope this helps, I'm in the same boat as you!

Al,

Sorry to post again, but one part I didn't make clear. They said as of right now there is not a class at all in February. They were hoping to be able to generate one.
