For the guys/gals wearing brown, I have a question regarding my medical. I've been treading water in the pool for quite sometime (7 mo). Back in January I was diagnosed w/ Type II Diabetes. (It sounds worst that it is). Nontheless, I lost my medical for a short while, but I'm happy to say that I've been back in the saddle since February w/ no problems. My question to you is, do I say something to the folks at HR of my condition prior to or wait untill I get a call for that UPS physical/ class date. Mind you, I CAN hold a first w/ no problem, but it does state a limitation.
What the hell do I do??
Help!!!!!!!!

PS
Good luck on that TA

I would wait. UPS really does not care as long as you can pass the medical. Now I could be wrong, but as long as you can do the job, there should not be any problem.

I am not sure how to handle that, but I can tell you I just flew w/ a captain that had the same thing... Not a big deal...

Hope you get the call soon!

wait until u go 4 your medical, once they ask u about your limitation then u can xplain what your situation was, until then u don't have to xplain to a x van driver about your condition because he sure will not understand it and may work against u. (remember rule #1 in interview, DO NOT VOLUNTEER ANY INFO MORE THAN U'VE BEEN ASKED)
good luck

I'd tell them now. If you wait for them to find out, they will think you are trying to withold information from them.

Why say anything? You were hired. You can hold a Class I medical. What's the problem? I doubt the hiring mins say anything about holding a medical with NO restrictions.

Does UPS make you go through a complete physical before they put you in class? Anything like the astronaut one we endured at Eagle?

As someone who's been through the process, I disagree with this advice. You applied to UPS and successfully interviewed. The final phase of the process is the physical. If there is anything that will preclude you medically from employment, it will be determined during the physical. That's the whole point of the physical.

When you were placed in the pool, UPS might have asked you to update your resume periodically. But I know they didn't say "and let us know if you develop diabetes."

I know it's easy to be flippant from the outside looking in, but look at it this way (1) You hold a 1st Class medical (2) You will complete the UPS physical and (3) You will answer any and all questions honestly at that time.

You're not doing anything wrong by waiting for the phone to ring and you're not doing anything wrong by passing a company physical.

Just my opinion...for whatever it's worth.

GOOD ADVICE!

Airdale.... how old are you? Are you slightly overweight, overweight, or obese? Just wondering... did the docs talk about why you have type 2 diabetes....... also what did they say about how to treat it? Thanks for the input.

Believe it or not it's all genetics. I was slightly overweight at the time I was diagnosed. I'm 35/180lbs. I workout. run, golf, snowboard etc etc etc. Sounds like a dating service, but it gives you an idea of my lifestyle. Then I get blindsided w/ this crap. My doc is still scratching his head about my case.
Go figure?

Treating type II consists of oral meds and working out. That's it, at least for me. Maintaining your sugars at a respectable level is the name of the game. Between 90- 130 before meals.

Good advice, GuppyWN. By the way, congratulations on being hired and good luck with the medical situation.

Airdale, good job on getting hired! Sorry about the type II- nothing you can't keep under control. (Ya know booze -beer & wine- has sugar in it!) You wrote you've been 'swimming' for 7 months. Do you know how many are swimming with you and did they indicate when your medical will be scheduled? Stay healthy!

JRT123----Head count in the pool.................no idea. No appoinment yet for a physical either. Folks at Brown said (crossing my fingers) possibly September. They'll (HR) get a better idea in the coming weeks when managment tells them how many classes they want to start.

Airdale,

Medical is a first class with a full eye, hearing test(in the booth) and EKG, with two tubes of blood, and a piss test. Lets not forget the doctor poking around on you body.

As for waiting in the pool, it will happen. I got out and I know the pool real well.....................17 months!!

I was told by the medical admin folks at the hospital that the only info they send to UPS is whether or not you passed the class I physical. That's it! This was last year. I don't think their policy would have changed since then. No worries because you already hold a class I. I would tell the doc about the type II. I wouldn't call HR because they could care less about your med issues. They only care if you can hold a class I.

That is correct. The UPS doc will only tell UPS whether or not you passed a class I physical. You will get in the mail a letter from the doc stating anything they found wrong with you that you SHOULD get looked at by your own doc.
Congrats and welcome to UPS. The latest CP hotline said that they would hire 150 more THIS year, so you shouldn't wait long for a class.

Hey Joeylikey,

Shouldn't you be studying or something, instead of reading flightinfo? :D Oh, maybe I should be, too...

How things goin'?

RVR,

Things are going good! Got some free time to lurk on the boards to get the unofficial info and mood about the TA. It sucks being on the sideline.

Airdale,

150 more newhires this year! Hope to see you on the property. Good luck!

Airdale and other poolies,

The memo came out and it said the " conservative " numbers for this year were 150 pilots and the same amount for early 2007. Latest numbers for planes are:

MD 11 - 38
747-400- 40

rumors of UPS looking for any and every 767-200 and A300-600 to convert to cargo are all over the place. 300 guys to retire within the next two years and at least 150 guys retiring if this TA is signed. Postal contract, menlo getting integrated and one other contract that UPS just got has them running around in circles trying to get planes and pilots. Also word in the training center is that they have no idea how they are going to train all the pilots they need for the MD's coming on property. Again these are all the rumors going around and I know of two classes that started in June, and at least two classes in July.... one of which started today with 10 727 SO's. Hope to get everybody yanked from the pool soon. Hang in there and good luck.

Airdale....

The doc is pretty darn cool....he will tell you himself that you've already made it to UPS unless you've done one of two things......

been stupid and have drugs in your system or you have a health problem that cannot be treated. Your situation is a no brainer and I think everybody here has given you the right advice to just sit tight and wait for the medical and take it from there. And the medical is nothing like I had to endure with that freaky doctor at Eagle so relax and hope to see you on property soon. Big wave is just forming and its brown as brown can get ;) .

ps. You aint buyin Sh!t...get your arse to class and I'll take care of your beers.
