When an airline is losing money, it is more valuable to have a payment then depreciaton is. Depreciation lets u offset income. Don't get me wrong, depreciation does take down the amount of revenue you earn, but for tax purpose, the payment of a lease if better than depreciation.

Now is good times you want depreciation. Plus if UAL owned and already paid for these aircraft, chances are the depreciation already ran out. Thus they were getting no advantage on the income statement. But owning your aircraft I think in the long run is better, but I could be wrong.
